Abstract
By their fifth year, students in the Egyptology program already possess extensive experience working with the various components of the discipline – ranging from philological work to archaeology, laboratory research, and digital analysis. The aim of this seminar is to integrate this knowledge and build a comprehensive understanding of the field and its place within the contemporary academic landscape.
The seminar is delivered during the second and third modules and incorporates the following themes:
Egyptology and colonialism: How are current decolonisation initiatives shaping the subject today?
Egyptology and international collaboration: What are opportunities for international collaboration exist in Egyptology today, what challenges do they face, and how can we overcome them?
What will endure in Egyptology? In today’s dynamic world, it is easy to focus on change but there are also fundamental features of the discipline which remain constant. So what can be changed within Egyptology, and what is unalterable?
Learning Objectives
- Engage with the latest theoretical debates in Egyptology
- Assess the ongoing significance of colonial history and decolonisation in Egyptology
- Evaluate the impact of new technologies on Egyptology (with particular reference to digitisation, AI and lab-based methodologies)
- Develop an appreciation of unchanging fundamentals in the discipline (what should Egyptology change, and what it should not)
- Critique other understandings of Egyptology in the world in a respectful and evidence-based fashion.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Critically examines contemporary theoretical debates in Egyptology and situates the field within today's wider academic landscape
- Evaluates how the discipline's colonial past and present-day decolonisation continue to shape Egyptology, including the legacy of artefact export and of now-discredited ideas such as eugenics and dynastic race theory
- Appraises alternative, globally varied conceptions of Egyptology in a respectful, evidence-grounded manner
- Produces and presents a well-structured academic talk and composes a well-supported essay (up to 3000 words) on a core seminar theme, referencing evidence and sources appropriately
- Examines the prospects for and obstacles to international collaboration in Egyptology, and the part played by international non-governmental bodies such as the IAE and the EES
- Appraises how emerging technologies — especially digitisation, artificial intelligence and laboratory-based methods — are reshaping Egyptological research
- Identifies the discipline's enduring fundamentals and judges which features of Egyptology should evolve and which should remain constant
