Abstract
The written history of ancient Mesopotamia spans approximately 3,000 years. Tens of thousands of cuneiform texts were composed in Sumerian, Akkadian, and other languages, allowing us to trace not only the region’s political development but also the evolution of its religious beliefs. Successive political formations, such as Sumerian city-states, the polity of king Sargon and his successors, the Babylonian kingdom under Hammurabi, and the Assyrian empire, which dominated much of the Near East, shaped Mesopotamian history, while cuneiform culture itself underwent significant transformations.
This course places particular emphasis on the interrelationship between history and religion. It examines major historical events alongside changes in religious thought that accompanied political and social upheavals. The course also explores the influence of Mesopotamian culture on Judea and Greece and, through them, on European civilization.
