Course Syllabus
Abstract
Aegean civilizations comprise the distinct Bronze Age cultures that flourished in the Aegean Sea region (in the period about 3000-1000 BC) — namely the Minoan (Crete), Cycladic (islands), and Helladic/Mycenaean (mainland) cultures. Known for pioneering art, maritime trade, and elaborate palace structures, these societies, particularly the Mycenaeans, established foundations for later Classical Greek culture.
The geographical area of the Aegean comprises primarily mainland Greece, Crete, and Cycladic Islands but extends also to Rhodes, the Dodecanese Islands, the western coast of Anatolia (modern Turkey), the eastern Mediterranean (Cyprus, Egypt, and the Levant), and the western Mediterranean (Sicily, Sardinia, and Italy). Thus, the cultural heritage of these regions is presented as part of the course.
The aim of the course is to provide students with a contemporary understanding of the formation, development and decline of Aegean societies. Students will be provided with explanations of historical processes, cultural change, art, architectural and technological development, writing systems, cross-cultural interaction, economics, trade, and military affairs.
Considering that the Aegean civilizations are an illustrative case of the formation, development, and decline of complex societies, the course may also be useful from a prognostic point of view, i.e., for developing students' analytical skills.

- Based on a comprehensive approach, forming a holistic understanding of the Aegean history and culture, incorporating the latest achievements of modern historical science.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Through a comprehensive analysis of primary sources and contemporary research, students will gain insight into ancient Greek civilization across various historical stages.
- Through the analysis of current academic literature, students develop the ability to critically assess scholarly perspectives on specific aspects of ancient Greek history.
- Enhance public speaking skills, learning to articulate and defend scholarly arguments based on critical source analysis and utilizing the specialized methodological toolkit of classical studies.
