Course Syllabus
Abstract
Ancient Greek Civilization covers the period following Mycenaean civilization, which ended about 1200 BC, to the death of Alexander the Great, in 323 BC. It was a period of political, philosophical, artistic, and scientific achievements that formed a legacy with unparalleled influence.
The course gives an accessible account of Greek history from 1200 BC to 323 BC and describes the Dark Ages of Greece; the Renaissance of the 8th c. BC; the Archaic miracle of Greek city-states; the Persian wars; the years which witnessed the flourishing of democracy in Athens; the establishment of the Athenian empire; the Peloponnesian War, which involved the whole Greek world; the development of Macedonian power under Philip II; and the conquests of Alexander the Great.
It should be noted that as an integral part of the course, attention is paid to art, material culture, literature, and economic development of Ancient Greece.

- Based on a comprehensive approach, forming a holistic understanding of the history and culture of Ancient Greece, incorporating the latest achievements of modern historical science.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Through a comprehensive analysis of primary sources and contemporary research, students will gain insight into ancient Greek civilization across various historical stages.
- Through the analysis of current academic literature, students develop the ability to critically assess scholarly perspectives on specific aspects of ancient Greek history.
- Enhance public speaking skills, learning to articulate and defend scholarly arguments based on critical source analysis and utilizing the specialized methodological toolkit of classical studies.

- Key Concepts in the Rise of the Greek Polis
- The Political and Social History of Athens and Sparta During the Archaic Period
- The Greco-Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War
- Greece in the 4th Century BCE
- The Campaign of Alexander the Great to the East and the Emergence of Hellenistic Culture
