Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course introduces students to key concepts related to language, culture, and intercultural communication, with particular attention to their role in contemporary communication and media contexts. It explores the social and cultural dimensions of language, the ways in which language reflects and shapes culture and society, and the implications of linguistic and cultural diversity for communication. The course develops students’ intercultural awareness and their ability to communicate effectively across cultural contexts, including professional and business settings, and to identify and address intercultural challenges and misunderstandings. Particular attention is paid to the role of cultural values, norms, identities, and stereotypes in communication.

  • develop students’ cultural awareness through the analysis of language in its social, cultural, and professional contexts;

  • develop students’ ability to analyse language and communication practices with attention to linguistic variation, meaning-making, persuasion, visual representation, and sociocultural factors;
  • support the development of students’ academic communication skills, with particular emphasis on oral academic presentations in English.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Test
    In one of the lectures or seminars, students are given a test based on the material covered in the lectures and/or seminars. The number and format of questions may vary and may include open-ended, multiple-choice, matching, and other types of questions. The test may be conducted without advance notice.
  • non-blocking Classroom participation
    Students are expected to attend all lectures and seminars, complete assigned readings and tasks, and actively participate in class discussions. Preparation for classes includes reading theoretical texts, case studies, or practical materials related to intercultural communication. During seminars, students are expected to contribute by asking and answering questions, analysing examples, and engaging in discussions relevant to the topics covered.
  • non-blocking Online game
    This is an online business simulation game. Aim of the game: to devise a successful marketing campaign by adjusting it to the cultural norms of the selected country in order to sell one of the company’s products. There are 3 stages that involve a number of tasks: CV application and interview, teamwork on a marketing campaign for a selected country and team’s presentation of their final project.
  • non-blocking Project
    Create a media product for an English-speaking audience, taking into account relevant cultural norms, values, and communication conventions. Choose one of the following formats: an advertising video (maximum 10 minutes); an advertising poster. Prepare a PowerPoint presentation in which you introduce your media product, explain its target audience and communication purpose, and justify the linguistic, visual, and cultural choices you have made with reference to relevant intercultural communication frameworks and models, such as Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, Hall’s high- and low-context cultures, and other concepts covered in the course. Group presentation: 4–5 students. Presentation time: 4–5 minutes (4–5 slides).
