Abstract

The course is aimed at acquirement basic knowledge and competences of modern Chinese language (А2; HSK 2), including phonetics, graphics, normative grammar and vocabulary in the amount provided by the course. The aim of studying is also to enable students to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Chinese and focus on practical activities and exercises as well as project work. It aims to foster intercultural competence and provide students with the ability to communicate effectively in Chinese-speaking environments, both orally and in writing. Additionally, the study of a second foreign language can enhance cognitive abilities, improve memory and problem-solving skills, and broaden cultural horizons.

Learning Objectives

To learn and demonstrate skills of conducting conversation and dialogue in Chinese language in typical situations in the amount provided by this course.
To report the results of the information retrieval and analysis, academic or applied research she/he has conducted in various genres according to level A2 (HSK 2).
To conduct professional activities internationally in Chinese.

Expected Learning Outcomes

to be able to make simple dialogs and to conduct a monologue on a given topic
To support a conversation and to write simple essays on a specified topic.
To use vocabulary and the necessary grammar on the topic.
To organize a discussion: establish communication and react, ask for a person and respond, ask to start a story, introduce a story topic, organize information, interrupt.
To give and ask for personal and object information, give and ask for information about reasons and causes, the information about the time and about purposes.
To influence the interlocutor: invite, get someone’s attention, give instructions and advice, make recommendations, express prohibition.
Formation of basic knowledge about Chinese culture, socio-cultural norms of speech behavior and the basics of intercultural communication
To describe and narrate: locate objects in a space, identify people, talk about other people, describe connections and similarities, describe the development of an action in the present, narrate present events, a daily routine, describe and compare objects, describe and physically compare people and personalities
To express opinions, attitudes and knowledge: argue, express and justify an opinion, agree, disagree, evaluate an idea and a fact, assess relationships, express the cause, consequence and purpose, difficulty
To express tastes, desires and emotions: talk about tastes, preferences and feelings, intentions and projects, express interest, surprise, disgust and gratefulness, physical sensations, pain or annoyance
Create short written texts of a descriptive nature (min. 10 phrases, correctly formatted in linguistic terms) based on the presented information (visual series, key words), highlighting a given main thesis or question and using elements of assumption

Assessment Elements

Interim Tests
The Midterm test (2- academic hours duration) is carried out at the end of each Module of the Semester. Midterm test includes vocabulary and grammar assignments and can be composed with different exercises and activities based on the material of the course. Students take Midterm test individually in class.
Listening part
The listening part of the exam is conducted before the written test. On the listening part of the exam, the student should listen the recording and choose the right answer. During the exam, students are forbidden to: communicate (on social networks, with people in the room), use notes and tips, write them off. During the exam, students are allowed to use a blank sheet as a draft. In case of cheating and/or a communication disruption, the student cannot continue to participate in the exam.
Homework
The Homework is offered to the Students during all the semester and it can be 8-10 Homework in one Module. Homework includes vocabulary and grammar assignments and can include different exercises and activities based on the material of the course. Students take this Homework individually, the use of AI is prohibited. Grades of 9 and 10 can be used by the teacher during ongoing or interim assessment if the student accomplishes tasks of heightened difficulty and/or demonstrates learning outcomes exceeding those specified in the course syllabus or internship programme.
Essay
Project work
Project work involves the creation of a presentation - individually. Each presentation should have 7-10 slides with information (50-75 % of each slide). The student freely talks about the material using her/his presentation. 7-12 minutes are given for the performance. The presentation is a required part of the course and is done by the student at the end of some units. There are 2 Presentations in the course: My family (the 1st Module), My district (the 2nd Module).
Written works
The Written work (1- academic hour duration) is carried out at the end of each topic in the syllabus. Written work includes vocabulary and grammar assignments. The Written work is offered to the Students during all the semester and it can be 3-5 Written works in one Module. Written work can include different exercises and activities based on the material of the course. Students take Written work individually in class. Grades of 9 and 10 can be used by the teacher if the student accomplishes tasks of heightened difficulty and/or demonstrates learning outcomes exceeding those specified in the course syllabus or internship programme.
Lexical dictation
Conducted during each lesson, lasting 5-7 minutes, at the beginning of class. Includes writing characters/words with transcriptions and translations, as well as creating phrases.
Final exam
The final test consists of 3 parts and includes vocabulary and grammar writing assignments. The student can have 20 points in total for all the assignments. Students take this test individually.
