Course Syllabus

Abstract

The academic discipline (optional) "English for lawyers in the field of civil and business law" is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of using the English language for professional communication in the field of civil and business law." The main purpose of any foreign language is to form communicative competence, that is the ability and willingness to carry out foreign-language interpersonal and intercultural communication with native speakers, especially in the professional field. The objectives of mastering the discipline within the framework of the program are to improve English language skills, and the acquisition by students of special competencies for business communications in the field of professional and scientific activities in interaction with foreign partners (contractors) in an English-speaking environment. The discipline provides for the active participation of students in practical classes, present and discuss some problems concerning with the future career and a written exam. There are no blocking elements of controls. To successfully master the discipline, students must possess the following knowledge and competencies: to know the basic normative documents in the field of civil law and business law; to be able to analyze judicial and arbitration practice; to have the skills to work with English-language scientific literature. The requirement for this course is that students must be proficient in English at the intermediate level.

  • to improve student’s ability to read and understand law journal articles, commercial legislation, legal texts, legal correspondence;
  • to increase student’s comprehension of spoken English (legal topics in lectures, presentations, interviews, discussions, etc);
  • to strengthen student’s speaking and writing skills in a range of situations typical of the study of law and the practice of law (client interview, act out in court etc.);
  • to develop an understanding of the law and consolidate language skills;
  • to engage in designing a contract or employment contract; - to read or listen to legal articles, letters, proposals, client interviews or presentations.
