Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course examines the theory and practice of urbanism. During the course, students will have an opportunity to get acquainted with the history of urbanization and with a variety of theoretical understanding of the specifics of the urban way of life, the process of the growth and development of the cities. The course introduces the history, international and Russian experience of developing concepts and strategies for spatial development, regional and urban master planning, their strengths, and weaknesses.

  • The student defines the main concepts of the course, uses new terminology, recognises different theoretical approaches to the understanding of urban space, expresses his/her point of view
  • The student applies the acquired knowledge of theoretical approaches to the sociological study of urban space, the processes of segregation, inequality, gentrification while performing the tasks

  • non-blocking In-class participation
    IN-CLASS PARTICIPATION includes attending lectures and working in seminars. Attendance at lectures will be included in the overall percentage of attendance. Working оn seminars involves completing the lecturer's assignments during classes, reading texts at home, and completing assignments for seminars at home. • Be ready to: • read and discuss literature • analyze videos, cases • conduct mini-research and present the results • make PowerPoint presentations Seminar participation and performance will be assessed according to the following 0–4 scale: 0 - Absent 1 - Present but not engaged in the session 2 - Participated but responses contained errors 3 - Demonstrated a solid command of the material with no major errors 4 - Delivered an outstanding, well-reasoned response demonstrating mastery The average score across all seminars will subsequently be converted into a 10-point grade, which will contribute to the final course grade. Please not, that the average grade for in-class participation will not be rounded.
  • non-blocking Exam
    The final control will be in the form of a test consisting of different questions (single choice, multiple choice, open-ended questions). The maximum number of points scored will be 40 The examination has a time limit. The time to complete the test is 1 hour and 20 minutes.
  • blocking Project
    The exam is held in the form of presentation of group projects on urban studies. The research topic is chosen by students and discussed with the course instructors. The following components should be included in the presentation: 1. Research topic, its relevance and significance. 2. Theoretical framework of the research. 3. The brief introduction of the research design: logic of the study, methods, sample, the description of the empirical data for analysis 4. Analysis, results and conclusions.
