Course Syllabus
Abstract
This discipline is part of the elective educational tracks offered to Bachelor's and Specialist's degree students choosing their optional English course in accordance with the Concept for the Development of Foreign Language Communicative Competence of HSE students. This course aims to enhance language skills for everyday communication. Throughout the course, students develop their listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, along with vocabulary and grammar, through both in-person interactions and online activities. By the end of the course, students will gain the skills and confidence to communicate effectively in English at the intermediate level (HSE Scale 40-49). They will be able to write essays, participate in discussions, answer questions confidently, read both adapted texts, and understand lectures, podcasts, and everyday conversations. Within the course, students are expected to do home assignments and take tests in various formats, including but not limited to lexical-grammar, reading, listening, writing, and speaking tests. The course grading formula does not include blocking elements.
Learning Objectives
- This course aims to help students advance to the level of confident users of English and boost their language skills and competencies to the intermediate level (HSE Scale 40-49).
Expected Learning Outcomes
- To develop skills of using basic listening techniques (predicting, understanding main ideas and details)
- To improve understanding of dialogues and polylogues on both familiar and unfamiliar topics
- To develop understanding of lectures and learning context
- To form understanding of text structure
- To develop understanding of articles and other texts
- To develop writing skills (essay)
- To expand lexical and grammatical repertoire
- To develop skills of using basic reading techniques of skimming and scanning (predicting, understanding main ideas, understanding details)
- To be able to produce monologues (descriptive/argumentative)
- To be able to participate in dialogues/discussions
Assessment Elements
- AttendanceAttendance grade is calculated using a 10-point grading scale based on a student’s attendance rate.
- English Grammar and Vocabulary TestStudents take the English Grammar and Vocabulary Test in class. Time - 70 min.
- Home AssignmentHA includes oral and/or written tasks that are assigned to students for independent completion and submission. Students do the tasks at home and either turn them in to their teachers or submit them via Smart LMS for grading.
- Written AssessmentWA consists of minimum 4 tasks of different types, including interim ones (for example, essays, graph descriptions, reviews, reports). WA can also include annotations, listening and reading tasks, grammar and vocabulary tasks at the end of a section or topic. WA refers to written tasks that students do in class.
- Oral AssessmentOA consists of minimum 3 tasks of different types, including interim ones (for example, monologues and discussions) that students do in class.
- Final AssessmentWhat is included: reading tasks, an essay. The grading formula: 0,4 Reading + 0,6 Essay
