Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course examines the interview not simply as a method of data collection, but as a site of knowledge production and a culturally structured form of interaction. We will approach interviews ethnographically, i.e. as events shaped by institutional settings, genre conventions, positionality, etc. We will see how questions shape answers, how narratives are co-produced in dialogues, how silence and hesitation carry meaning, and how interviews intersect with participant observation. The course is intended for graduate students preparing for their fieldwork, so particular attention is paid to designing research questions and interview guides, negotiating access and building rapport, recording and transcribing, analyzing and representing interview data, ethical dilemmas and confidentiality. Through practical exercises, students will conduct and transcribe their own interviews, produce fieldnotes and analytic memos, apply different methods of understanding what happened between them and their interlocutors. Readings will include methodological texts and exemplary ethnographies that demonstrate possible uses of interview material.
