Course Syllabus

Abstract

The main objective of the course is to introduce students to the basic knowledge on English Lexicology, to obtain theoretical knowledge of the subject and be able to put the knowledge into practice. The course might prove to be greatly useful for linguists of different specialisations, namely future teachers, translators and interpreters and cross-cultural communication specialists, to provide students with basic information on the main subjects of English Lexicology – meaning, types of meaning, motivation and its types, lexicology and lexicography, types of dictionaries, etc. The principal objectives of the course of "Theoretical Phonetics" are to provide students with basic theoretical knowledge in the field of English phonetics and phonology; to develop students' foreign language communicative competencies, including linguistic, sociolinguistic and phonetic competencies; to teach students to comment on research articles related to the issues of theoretical phonetics and to put their knowledge into practice.

    Time limit: 15 minutes. Maximal number of students participating: 5. Each student has a chance to participate in one group mini-project (max 20 points).

    All the assessment tasks are supposed to be done in class, none of them can be retaken. Only examination can be retaken. If a student has the arithmetic average final grade 8, 9 or 10 for all the 4 types of assessment tasks (excluding the exam) the course instructor can give him/her an automatical grade for the course.
  • non-blocking Continuous assessment
    The student is given up to 10 minutes to write several definitions for the terms on the given topic. Also the student can be asked questions on the theoretical material on the given topic/

    Classwork features pair- and groupwork, valid contributions to problem solving activities and discussions, and writing quizzes.

    Экзамен проводится в устной форме (ответ на теоретический вопрос) с использованием асинхронного прокторинга. Экзамен проводится на платформе Zoom (https://zoom.us/), прокторинг на платформе Экзамус (https://hse.student.examus.net). К экзамену необходимо подключиться за 15 минут. На платформе Экзамус доступно тестирование системы. Во время экзамена студентам разрешено: пользоваться собственными письменными конспектами, написанными во время подготовки к ответу. Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается прерывание связи до 10 минут. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается прерывание связи 10 минут и более. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи аналогична процедуре сдачи.
