Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course of Information Computer Systems is a part of set of the mandatory courses (B2. Maths&Sciences) for the bachelor degree and is delivered during the first semester of the first year students of ICEF. The course is not a part of the External Curriculum of the London School of Economics. The knowledge gained through this course will improve student’s professional status as well as enhance the efficiency of other following courses. The course covers half year and consists of two parts. The first part deals with specific features of spreadsheet software MS Excel for economic and financial tasks as well as with data and output analysis. This part is teaching at advanced level. The second part covers programming in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which facilitates processing spreadsheet data and increases the productivity in MS Excel. This part is teaching at a basic level.

  • To give students a holistic view of modern information technologies and their role in professional activities
  • To reveal the possibilities of computer's hardware and software and to form the stable skills of working in computer technologies area for solving economic and financial tasks
  • To develop basic programming skills in using the object-oriented language, aiming on expanding the functionality of MS Excel in processing the large data volumes, in developing the user-defined functions and subroutines, in event handling and in creating a graphical user interface.

  • Create dialog boxes (UserForms) to obtain information, clarify commands, and display messages.

  • Manipulate Excel objects.Referencing objects.
  • Outline principles of Network types and Internet functioning. Search engines and portals. E-mail.
  • Record the macro, examine and edit the macro.
  • Sort and filter table data. Extract results of Advanced Filter.
  • To apply important control structures in VBA, which gives applications decision-making capability.
  • Understand Functions Syntax. Use Computational and financial Excel functions.
  • use computer hardware, explain characteristics of the main computer devices, their impact on efficient work, System and application software.
  • Use Excel logical functions in conditional analysis performing different actions depending on whether a condition is met.
  • use skills in creating and formatting text documents, applying the font and paragraph formatting, creating tables of any structure, adding graphic objects to the text.
