Аннотация
This part of the course concentrates on Korean history starting from its early periods, prior to the 17th century, social and intellectual developments, domestic order and relations with China. It then proceeds to discuss the 18th and the 19th century placing a particular emphasis on the emergence of the independence movement of the late-19th century as well as Korea's contacts with the outer world, in particular, with China, Russia and Japan, which all have a significant influence over Korea at the time. Among other topics, the following issues are addressed: modernization in Joseon Korea and failed reforms, the last days of Joseon Korea and the start of the Japanese occupation of Korea.
Цель освоения дисциплины
- The aim of this course is to define key historical events, processes, ideas and concepts, which influenced the political, economic and cultural development of Korea from ancient times to the middle of the 20th century; to reveal the main patterns in the history of relations of Korea with its neighbours, especially China and Japan; and to provide an overview of Korean history as a continuous process which shaped the contemporary political, cultural and social situation.

- • Students can compare political and social systems of Goryeo and Silla.

- • Students can describe the transformation of Korean views on its place in the world and in the East Asian region in ancient and medieval periods.
- • Students are able to analyse the development of the government and social system of Joseon.
- • Students can describe the main events of the Imjin war and its consequences for Korea and its neighbours.
- • Students are able to explain the key processes in Korean cultural and political development during the 17-19th centuries.
- • Students can describe the geopolitical situation in East Asia before the Japanese occupation of Korea.
- • Students can define key features of the Japanese colonial rule on the Korean peninsula and its influence on the development of Korea.
- • Students can compare the development of North and South Korea in the first post-war period.
- • Students are able to describe the impactful events of the Korean War and its consequences for the two Korean states.
