Course Syllabus
Abstract
The aim of this course is to help students master basic and higher levels of legal English, the basics of legal translation, analysis of the most common legal documents in English, understanding professional legal texts, drafting some legal documents (legal opinions, memoranda, case briefs).The research seminar comprises two parts. In the first part, students will have an opportunity to study the main branches of legislation in common law countries (using the law of England and Wales as an example).In the second part, students focus on the specifics of translating legal documents (claims, contracts, judgments, memoranda) and analysing landmark cases of English common law.
Learning Objectives
- The main purpose of the Research Seminar is to develop students' ability to analyse, translate and draft legal documents in common law jurisdictions. The secondary purpose of the Research Seminar is to practice the Foundation and Higher Levels of the Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES) exam to objectively assess the knowledge acquired by the students.

- Identify the sources of international law
- Understand what treaties are and their importance in States’ relations.
- Understand the various meanings of ‘jurisdiction’.
- Understand the meaning of ‘immunity’ and the various senses in which we use the term in international law.
- Understand the processes for peacefully settling disputes amongst States.
- Understand what State responsibility is and its role in State relations.
- Understand the role of the International Court of Justice in settling international disputes.
- Understand the nature of IEL.
- Comprehend how, and by what means, human rights are protected.
