Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course “Russia and Countries of the East” is a basic course for students enrolled in the “Asian and African Studies” program, and is aimed at acquiring basic factual and theoretical knowledge necessary for further comprehensive study of the selected region. In practical terms, the objective of the course is to familiarize students with the process of the formation and development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East, mainly in new and modern times. In theoretical terms, it is assumed that students will become familiar with the main historical, political and economic processes taking place in the studied regions.

  • To form a comprehensive understanding of the main stages of the formation and development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East and stable knowledge of the history of relations between Russia and the countries of the East.
  • To instill in students the skills of analyzing social, political, religious and economic relations between Russia and the countries of the East, based on sources and research literature.
  • To acquaint students with the main sources and research on the history of the formation and development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East.
  • To develop students' skills of oral presentation of historical material.

  • Able to conduct research activities, including analyzing problems, setting goals and objectives, identifying the object and subject of research, choosing the method and methods of research, as well as assessing its quality.
  • Able to distinguish between the general and the specific features in the formation and historical development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East.
  • Have the skills of sequential historical analysis, the technique of abstracting texts on historical topics and preparing an oral message on a given topic.
  • Know general principles and patterns of development of relations between Russia and the countries of the East.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Presentation
    Presentation grade is composed on the base of the grade for individual presentation for proposed topics. Each student should make one presentation for this course. A presentation should be performed on the base of two and more sources and have original and problem character for the topic of this course. A presentation should contain an element (elements) of discussion. Students at their presentations should propose questions for discussion in the audience. For example, in the presentation for the topic “Image of Russia in Japan” a speaker can propose to discuss possible ways of improving of Russia’s image in Japan. Student needs mention cases of citation, presentation should be logical and mutually connected. Literature for a presentation must have academic characteristics. A grade for presentation might be decreased for illogical explanation, absence of problematic character and formulated conclusions, absence of PPT slides, exceeding the 15 minutes time limits.
  • non-blocking Seminar
    Seminar grade is formed on the base of participation of students at seminars’ work. Students should take part in discussion of presentations. Making a presentation is considered as a part of seminar activity. Also an instructor can set the discussion of different issues, connected with topic of previous lectures. Topic of next discussion will be announced at a previous seminar.
  • blocking Exam
    Exam is realized in the written form, composed of 20 test questions of different type (open questions (8), questions with choice of variant (10), short essays (2)). Time limit for exam – 60 minutes.
