Course Syllabus

Abstract

Structurally, classical archeology belongs to the group of disciplines of the first year of study in the magistracy. It is directly related both to the adaptation disciplines of the master's program ("Ancient and Oriental archeology", "Introduction to the grammar of ancient languages"), the disciplines of the basic part ("History of historical science", "Historical textology", "Natural scientific methods in archeology, physical anthropology, paleogenetics, basics of geoinformatics"), disciplines of the variable part of the course ("History of archaeological methods, theories and legislation"); as well as with elective disciplines (“Archaeology of Iran and Central Asia”, “Biblical Archeology and Archeology of Pharaonic Egypt”, “Black Sea Region, Caucasus and Transcaucasia in Antiquity”, “Archaeology of the Eurasian Steppes: Iron Age and Early Middle Ages”).

Learning Objectives

• To present and explain to students the specifics of the history of the formation of archaeology, as well as its place in the system of sciences; To explain to students the specific features of archaeological sources as objects of scientific research, as well as to teach them specialized methods of their study; To lay the foundations of the system of knowledge of archaeology as a discipline; To introduce students to ancient culture as a specific object of archaeological study; To teach students the basic abilities and basic skills necessary when working with scientific literature; Based on the study of archaeological sources related to archaeology, to form students' understanding of the humanistic universal values of the Ancient Civilization.

Course Contents

• Archaeology as a science. The content of the archaeological site and the principles of its study.
  Before discussing the methodology of field archaeology, it will not be superfluous to remember the provisions on which this methodology is based, as well as to understand the basic categories with which the archaeologist deals in the process of research, as it make a basis of a science.
• Cultural layer and stratigraphy in archaeological research.
• Archaeological Cultures
• Archaeology and chronology. Determining the time of a site in archaeology. Chronological indications given by the monuments themselves.
• The condition of ancient monuments, the beginning and general rules for the organization and conduct of scientific excavations.
