Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course aims at the development of students' communicative competence in the English language above C1 level. After completing it, students will be able to understand and critically analyse complex, informationally dense texts on a variety of topics including technology, medicine, art, scientific exploration, etc. Students will significantly enlarge their topic-related vocabulary and master some complex grammatical and syntactic structures. By the end of the course students will be able to produce analytic texts of a variety of genres in oral and written formats.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • can understand extended discourse on abstract and complex topics beyond their field of interest, including when it is not clearly structured, when ideas are signalled implicitly or when pronunciation is not standard
  • can understand all texts (incl. abstract, structurally complex, highly colloquial, literary and non-literary), understanding subtle distinctions of style and register
  • can produce clear, smoothly flowing, well-structured discourse with an effective logical structure which helps the recipient to notice and remember significant points
  • can give clear, detailed descriptions and presentations on complex subjects, integrating sub-themes, developing particular points and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion
  • can produce clear, well-structured texts of complex subjects, underlining the relevant salient issues, expanding and supporting points of view at some length with subsidiary points, reasons and relevant examples, and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion
  • can express themselves fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly; has a good command of a broad lexical repertoire allowing gaps to be readily overcome with circumlocutions; has a good command of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms with awareness of connotative levels of meaning
  • can convey clearly and fluently in well-structured language the significant ideas in long, complex texts, whether or not they relate to their own fields of interest, conveying evaluative aspects and most nuances precisely, and pointing out sociocultural implications (e.g. use of register, understatement, irony and sarcasm)
