Course Syllabus

Abstract

The program is for the 1st-year students (Bachelor's degree program "Jurisprudence" and "Digital Lawyer""). The program is designed to develop foreign-language communicative and professional competencies that is based on the “Concept of the Development of English-language Communicative Competence of HSE Students ” and adheres to the "Regulations for Interim and Ongoing Assessment of Students at National Research University Higher School of Economics”. The course is focused on basic professional terminology and knowledge of legal professions, litigation and arbitration, criminal law and company law within the framework of Anglo-Saxon and American law. The course supports both classroom and independent learning (online course). There are no blocking points of assessment.

  • - to improve student’s ability to read and understand law journal articles, commercial legislation, legal texts, legal correspondence;
  • - to increase student’s comprehension of spoken English (legal topics in lectures, presentations, interviews, discussions, etc);
  • - to strengthen student’s speaking and writing skills in a range of situations typical of the study of law and the practice of law (client interview, act out in court etc.);
  • - to develop an understanding of the law and consolidate language skills;
  • - to engage in designing a contract or employment contract;
  • - to read or listen to legal articles, letters, proposals, client interviews or presentations.

  • One knows the general overview of university law courses as its starting point and practical skills required for careers in law, and different routes to legal profession;
  • One distinguishes the main types of legal professions and lawyers, especially in common law countries;

  • One communicates legal concepts and information confidently and easily;
  • One improves the presentation skills; and uses legal English in discussions and presentations confident in their ability and knowledge.
