Course Syllabus

Abstract

The “Leadership and team management” course introduces students to the fundamental concepts in the field of leadership, forms an understanding of the modern view of the role and typology of leaders in business and public life, develops practical skills in working with methods and tools used for research and analysis of managerial characteristics. The students will also become familiar with modern approaches to team building and team management. During the course, students will become familiar with the most significant theories exploring the phenomenon of leadership and will study practical approaches and cases necessary for understanding and developing management competencies. The goal of the course is to teach students to analyze processes within a team and develop solutions to improve its effectiveness. Students’ independent work includes studying additional materials related to the respective thematic section, as well as practicing the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills and consolidating them through homework and a group project to identify, analyze and develop leadership potential.

Learning Objectives

• The purpose of Leadership and team management course is to develop knowledge and understanding of key theories, competencies and practical skills of working as a team leader and a project team member, to prepare students for organizational, managerial, analytical activities as team leaders, capable of solving problems in team formation, diagnosing teamwork, identifying team management problems, developing recommendations for improving team interaction.

Expected Learning Outcomes

• To study and be able to describe the concepts of leader and leadership. Understand what changes are happening in the business environment and how they change leaders. Understand how leadership skills develop over time. Know the stages of team development and the leader’s role at each stage.
• Understand the differences between leadership as a position and leadership as a process, leader and manager. Understand the characteristics of a formal and informal leader. Become familiar with different leadership styles. Develop practical skills in defining and developing own leadership style.
• Get an understanding of the principles of team formation and development. Be able to identify different roles in a team and understand what determines team effectiveness.
• Understand how a leader influences the success of a company. Get an understanding of the destructive manifestations of leadership and study approaches to correcting dysfunctional leadership.
• Get practical skills in analyzing leadership styles, applying the leadership style most appropriate to the stage of company development, determining the stage of team development and applying leadership approaches appropriate to each stage, managing a team in terms of goal setting, evaluation and motivation, managing distributed teams.

Assessment Elements

  На каждом семинаре студент получает от 0 до 3 баллов в зависимости от своей активности и участии в обсуждении/
• Домашнее задание – презентация команды
  Групповой проект. Презентация минигрупп (5-6 чел.) на одну из тем, предложенных студентам в начале курса. Результаты проекта оформляются в виде презентации в формате Power Point. Группа представляет презентацию оффлайн в форме доклада на одном из семинаров. Время выступления – не более 10 минут. В ходе презентации оценивается комплекс навыков, полученных по итогам курса: раскрытие темы, четкость и наглядность представления материалов на слайдах, навыки презентации, деловой этикет. Оценка выставляется по 10-балльной шкале на группу, все участники группы получают одну и ту же оценку.
• Групповой проект

• Тест
  Итоговый письменный экзамен. Включает 40 вопросов (с выбором одного правильного варианта ответа, нескольких правильных вариантов ответа, с оценкой на соответствие «верно/не верно»). Длительность теста – 40 минут.
