Course Syllabus

Abstract

This elective course aims to help them develop their proficiency in academic English discourse. Special emphasis is placed on English for research purposes. The course addresses both writing and speaking conventions of research English and teaches students to produce their papers according to the IMRAD pattern which guides the writing of most research articles: examined and practiced are such sections as Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. Students also practice their academic speaking skills aimed at presenting effectively their research at conferences, seminars and suchlike forums. The course is designed primarily for those who have little to no experience in research writing in English and who will write their dissertations in English.

  • To familiarize students with various genres of research discourse in English.
  • To focus on writing papers according to IMRAD requirements.
  • To teach students how to draft, revise, and edit pieces of a research paper.
  • To teach students how to present their research at academic forums (conferences, seminars, symposia, etc.) and formal examination events (project and dissertation defense).

  • Students can pick relevant literarure.
  • Students can identify research gaps and formulate relevant research questions.
  • Students can analyze relevant literature and and present the analysis in the form of a literature review.

  • Students can draft and redraft Methods sections of their papers.
  • Students can present findings of their studies and discuss them within a relevant research context.
  • Students can draft and redraft Results and Discussion sections of their papers.
  • Students can draft and redraft Introductions and Lirerature Reviews of their papers.
  • Students can draw conclusions relevant for their studies and identify prospect for further research.

  • Students can make oral presentations of their studies in different contexts.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Research Presentation and Discussion
    Students make oral presentations of their studies and have them discussed by their peers and professor in the format of a conference session/workshop.
  • non-blocking Paper
    Write a section that could be further integrated in your prospective dissertation. You have the following options: a) Literature Review; b) Methods + Results (anticipated, achieved, or both). c) A combination of the two.
  • non-blocking Self Study
    Students complete practice quizzes asynchronously on the Smart LMS.
  • non-blocking Class Participation and Home Assignments
    This assessment unit encompasses such activities as in-class discussions, quizzes, home assignments, both oral and written, etc. The grade will be conclulated as a mean value of grades for each activitiy. The number of activities and assignments will be determined by the context and group dynamics.
