HSE Students Win Gold and Silver at ICPC Semifinal

On December 6–7, 2022, the semifinal of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) took place in St Petersburg. Two teams from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science won medals at NERC 2022: FFTilted took overall 2nd place and received the gold medal, and It Has To Work took 8th place (silver medal). Two teams from HSE University—FFTilted (Moscow) and Just3Keks (St Petersburg)—will take part in the ICPC finals, which will be held in Egypt in 2023.

The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is the largest international student programming competition. NERC ICPC (Northern Eurasia Regional Contests) is the semifinal of the contest.

This year, the ICPC semifinal was held at four venues in different cities: St Petersburg, Barnaul, Almaty and Kutaisi. In total, more than 300 teams from more than 70 regions of Russia and the CIS took part in the semifinal.

Ten HSE teams participated in the competition. HSE University in Moscow was represented by five teams from the Faculty of Computer Science: FFTilted, It Has To Work, Elderly Passion Fruit, FAT and Dirizhabl’. Just3Keks and jaba represented HSE University-St Petersburg; Brawl Stars and Dark Horse came from the Nizhny Novgorod campus, and ALKgo! came from HSE University-Perm. Results of the HSE University teams

 FFTilted: 1st-year students Alexander Babin, Kirill Kudryashov, Fedor Romashov were awarded a 1st-class certificate of achievement and a gold medal for overall 2nd place.

  It Has To Work: 1st-year students Vladimir Novikov and Ivan Machugovsky, 3rd-year student Alesya Ivanova were awarded a 1st-class certificate and a silver medal (8th place).

  Just3Keks: 2nd-year bachelor’s students Anton Bykov and Vladislav Mosin, as well as 2nd-year master's student Vladislav Epifanov were awarded a 2nd-class certificate (15th place).

  Elderly Passion Fruit: Yuri Pustovalov (2nd-year), Alexander Nekrasov (1st-year), Igor Markelov (3rd-year) were awarded a 2nd-class certificate (17th place).

  FAT: 3rd-year students Alikhan Zimanov, Temirkhan Zimanov, as well as 2nd-year student Fyodor Popov were awarded a 2nd-class certificate (18th place).

  Dirizhabl’: 4th-year students Alexey Arzhantsev, Dmitry Akulov, Mikhail Pogodin – were awarded a 2nd-class certificate and a gold medal (21st place).

  jaba: 1st-year master’s students Maxim Deb Nath and Alexandra Olemskaya, as well as 4th-year student Herman Tarabonda were awarded a 3rd-class certificate (49th place).

  Brawl Stars: 1st-year students Leonid Yakhtin and Mikhail Zhelezin, as well as 2nd-year master’s student Elizaveta Martirosyan were awarded a 3rd-class certificate (74th place).

  Dark Horse: 1st-year students Niyaz Gazizulin, Timur Lebedev and Alexander Kulikin placed 202nd.

  ALKgo!: 1st-year students Kirill Talan, Alisa Dolnykova and Valeria Belash placed 221st.

‘This year, first-year HSE students made it to the ICPC finals, but they already have a lot of experience of participating in computer science competitions,’ notes Mikhail Gustokashin, Director of the Centre of Student Competitions at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and coach of the student teams at ICPC. ‘In the 11th grade, they won the All-Russian Olympiad of School Students in Computer Science and received medals in the International Olympiad. There is almost a year until the ICPC finals, and we’ll dedicate this time to team training.’

On April 14–19, 2024, two finals of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) took place in Luxor (Egypt). The teams from HSE University’s Faculty of Computer Science became world champions in the 47th ICPC final and received gold medals in the 46th final.

HSE Students Win Bronze in International Programming Contest

Fourth-year HSE students Ivan Safonov and Mikhail Anoprenko of the Faculty of Computer Science have won a bronze award in the International Collegiate Programming Contest. The competition finals were held in Moscow on October 5. Students from HSE University’s campuses in Moscow and St. Petersburg took part in the competition, with the team from Russia’s second city placing 19th overall.
