HSE University Appears in Twice as Many Top 100 Subject Rankings as Last Year
The publication of the latest Times Higher Education subject rankings in the Arts and Humanities concludes the annual publication cycle of the three main ranking agencies: THE, QS and ARWU. Since last year, HSE University has managed to double the number of top 100 subject rankings it appears in, growing from 6 to 12.
HSE University entered the top 100 world universities in three new subject areas in the QS rankings: Education, Mathematics, and Philosophy. It also appeared for the first time in Mathematics in the ARWU rankings and Law and Social Sciences in the THE rankings.

‘Every year, we review the performance of Russian universities in world rankings and analyse their successes and failures in order to make concrete conclusions and set out new development plans.
Our results for 2021 were good, and HSE University continues to expand its subject areas to become a multidisciplinary university. HSE is a very young university in the higher education system. It will celebrate its 29th anniversary in a month, and it spent the first twenty of those years developing its social and economic disciplines. That is why we achieve our best results in these subject areas, which was recognized this year with an international award for best practices in research management from Elsevier and QS.
In the last ten years, HSE University has opened faculties in engineering, the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science.
In that short time, the university has appeared in top world university rankings in countless subject areas, including life science and medicine. This year, we entered the top 100 universities in mathematics in three world rankings: QS, ARWU, and US News.’
HSE University has improved its performance in the Times Higher Education subject rankings for the Arts and Humanities, entering the 151–175 bracket and taking joint 3rd–4th place among Russian universities with Tomsk State University. A total of eight Russian universities appeared in the rankings.
This year, HSE University appeared in the world rankings for 41 subjects. This is the university’s best performance to date, and reflects the multidisciplinary character that has earned it a position among the top three Russian universities alongside Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University—classical institutions with their own rich histories. HSE ranked first among Russian universities in 22 subject areas (up from 21 last year) and was the sole representative of Russian higher education in six of them.
The methodology behind both the subject rankings and overall university rankings comprises 13 indicators divided into five categories. The weighting of each indicator varies by subject area.
HSE University is one of the best Russian universities (4th place) and consistently ranks among the top 150 best universities in the world (142nd place) according to the Three University Missions world ranking that has been published since 2017.
HSE University is Consistently in the Top-5 of the Best Russian Universities according to the Shanghai Ranking
HSE University has improved its positions in the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) thanks to continued improvement in several indicators. For the second year in a row, HSE has ranked 4th or 5th among Russian universities, while globally, it has improved its rank to now being in the 601–700 group.
For the second year, ICEF leads the HeadHunter ranking of top Russian universities and faculties in economics and finance. Analysts from hh.ru examined the CV database of 2021–2022 graduates of Moscow universities on the hh.ru website. The ranking covered nine professional fields.
HSE University is represented in more subjects (10—an increase from 8 last year) in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects than any other Russian university.
The SuperJob jobhunting and recruitment service has published its 2022 ranking of Russian universities by salary. The results are based on a sample of early-career professionals from the 2016–2021 graduating classes and who are now working in economics and finance. HSE University took second place.
HSE University has taken first place in four subjects in the research productivity ranking of Russian universities published by the Expert analytical centre. The university also placed in the top five in eight other subjects.
HSE University has taken third place in terms of demand for graduates on the job market in the RAEX ranking. HSE University has been in the Top-5 universities in the RAEX ranking for the last four years.
Three University Missions Ranks HSE University First among Russian Universities in Four Subject Rankings
HSE University took first place in four subject rankings and second place by the number of gold medals among Russian universities. The university entered the top three Russian universities by receiving nine prizes in various fields. The Three University Missions subject rankings in 29 fields of study were presented for the first time at an open meeting of the Council of the Russian Union of Rectors and the Association of Rating Makers.
HSE University has placed 66th in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2022, which assess universities younger than 50 years old. The THE Young University Ranking is the first in a series of global rankings to be published in 2022.
HSE University has improved on last year's result, entering the 126–150 range of the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings. Among Russian universities, HSE University shares 2–4th place with the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and St. Petersburg State University.
