Responsibilities

Coordination of the following activities at HSE University:

  • organizing advanced, e.g., interdisciplinary, research projects and expert activities in strategic planning for higher education, for the purpose of finding solutions to the current challenges facing the national economy, e.g., enhancing its competitiveness;
  • developing and promoting strategic academic cooperation between HSE University and its partners;
  • general coordination of inter-university cooperation within the system of higher learning, including expert analysis in strategic planning for higher education, professional development and retraining of university administrators (except for matters directly overseen by the University’s First Vice Rectors, Vice Rectors and Senior Directors, as well as the Directors of regional campuses);
  • general coordination of HSE University’s efforts in shaping, developing and promoting strategic academic partnerships, e.g., interaction with state authorities, local self-government bodies, academic institutions at all levels of education, research centres, rating agencies specializing in education quality assessments and other legal entities, as well as cooperation with the “Global Universities” Association and other academic associations/consortiums;
  • coordinating and organizing comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of strategic planning tools in higher education; assessing the promotion of national tertiary education on the global market;
  • coordinating and developing intra-university and inter-campus cooperation in regards to the development of strategic academic partnerships, e.g., the  HSE “University Partnership” programme;
  • preparing proposals to improve tools for HSE University’s strategic development.

‘The Open Doors Olympiad Is a Tool that Helps to Select the Best Students and Ensures Our Stable Development in Science’

A meeting of the Association of Global Universities was held in the White Hall of the Durasov House at HSE University. The participants welcomed new members of the association, summed up the results of the work in 2023 and outlined goals for the next year. They paid special attention to the International Open Doors Olympiad, which attracts students from all over the world. Interest in the Olympiad is growing as foreign applicants get the opportunity to study at leading Russian universities for free.

Olympiads, Postdocs, World-class Research Centres: Opportunities for Young International Researchers in Russia

The III Young Scientists Congress took place in the Sirius Science and Art Park on November 28–30, 2023. On the first day of the forum, a discussion was held on the tools and opportunities for engaging international early-career researchers in Russian science. The meeting was organised by HSE University together with members of the Association of Global Universities.

1,700 International Participants Named Winners of Open Doors International Olympiad

On March 16, the results of the Open Doors International Olympiad for master’s and doctoral applicants were announced. The competition is organised by the Association of Global Universities with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo). HSE University is one of the Olympiad’s organisers and the site of its distributed project office.

Second Congress of Young Scientists: Students Are Ready to Implement Breakthrough Projects

The 2nd Congress of Young Scientists was held at the Sirius Park of Science and Art in Sochi. HSE University representatives took an active part in it, working at various venues where a wide range of topics were discussed—from university development to machine learning and scientific cinema.

HSE University to Become Centre of Expertise for LPR Universities

On October 19th, HSE Rector Nikita Anisimov became the first rector to visit the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), as part of a delegation following the Republic’s accession to Russia. During meetings with acting Head of LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, and the Republic’s Prime Minister, Sergey Kozlov, they signed an agreement between HSE University and LPR Government on strategic cooperation in education and research.

Russian Government Approves Programme of HSE Development until 2030

The Programme of HSE Development until 2030 has been approved by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin’s order. The document outlines the goals, tasks and responsibilities of the government and HSE University for its strategic development. According to the programme, the university’s strategic goal is its continuing development as a leading research, educational, analytical, consulting, and project university, which can compete head-to-head with the world’s best universities.

HSE University Appears in Twice as Many Top 100 Subject Rankings as Last Year

The publication of the latest Times Higher Education subject rankings in the Arts and Humanities concludes the annual cycle of the three main ranking agencies: THE, QS, and ARWU. Since last year, HSE University has managed to double the number of top 100 subject rankings it appears in, growing from 6 to 12.

HSE University Receives International Award for Best Practices in Research Management

HSE University has won in a joint nomination by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) international rankings agency and the company Elsevier. The award was presented as part of the forum ‘Development Trends in the Social Sciences and Humanities: Global Challenges and Best Russian Practices’ hosted by the State Academic University for the Humanities. Irina Karelina, Senior Director for Strategic Planning at HSE University, accepted the award and noted that the university’s success is largely down to its consistent personnel and research policies, as well as its support for young people.

HSE has been included in two Times Higher Education (THE) subject rankings. It is ranked in the Top 500 for Computer Science and in 801-1000 group for Engineering.

HSE University has improved its indicators of research, international outlook, and industry income in THE Young University Rankings. HSE University now ranks 57th among  475 international universities and is the only Russian university in the Top 100.

HSE University is now represented in eight subject rankings of the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. International experts have recognised Harvard University as the best in the world in terms of reputation. Moscow State University was ranked 37th, while HSE University entered the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2020, within the 151-175 range, taking fifth position among Russian universities, showing a commendable result for such a young institution.

HSE University Enters Top 100 in Mathematics and Improves Its Positions in US News Best Global Universities Rankings

HSE University has improved its positions in the US News Best Global Universities institutional and subject rankings. For the first time, the University ranks among the top 100 universities in the world for mathematics. HSE is also the only Russian university in the subject rankings of Economics and Business and Social Sciences and Public Health, placing among the top 300 in both categories.

HSE Now Among World’s Top 200 Universities for Research in THE University Rankings

This year, HSE University has maintained its position in the 251-300 range in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The University ranks among the top 3 Russian universities along with Moscow State University (which ranks 174th) and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (which ranks in the 201-250 range). In the THE’s global ranking of the best universities for research, HSE ranks 199th.

HSE University Climbs Shanghai Ranking

HSE University has advanced to the 801-900 group in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking and now ranks in the 7th-8th place among Russian universities. Moreover, HSE University is the only Russian university to improve its standing in the ranking this year.

This year, HSE University has entered four additional QS World University Rankings by Subject, thereby bringing its grand total of represented broad and specific subject areas to 23. Initiated in 2013, the Russian federal initiative, Academic Excellence Project 5-100, aims to maximize the competitive position of leading Russian universities in the global research and education market. On October 26, the Project Council concluded its seventh annual meeting in Moscow. At the meeting, delegations from participating universities presented reports of their progress in improving their international competitive edge.
