HSE University Maintains Positions in Two THE Subject Rankings
Compared to last year, HSE University has significantly improved its standing on such metrics as the share of international students and the number of university graduates awarded doctorates. In the Computer Science category, HSE University is consistently improving on the research reputation indicator.

‘In recent years, the Faculty of Computer Science has carried out research projects that have brought noteworthy results. We have both fundamental research projects, supported by the Russian Science Foundation, and applied projects that we do in cooperation with our industry partners. As a result, we've seen an increase in the number of publications at A * level conferences according to the CORE rating and in prestigious journals. What’s more, the number of high-level student publications is also growing. To support our students in their research, we have established a special scholarship. 'Traditionally, Russian universities have a strong presence in global university rankings in computer science (23 Russian universities) and engineering (50 Russian universities). For HSE University, these areas are relatively new: our engineering programmes appeared in 2012 when we merged with the Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (now MIEM HSE). The Faculty of Computer Science was created in partnership with Yandex in 2014.
HSE University has managed to build a strong reputation in IT and Engineering fields in only seven years and in competition with well-known universities like the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, ITMO, Bauman University, and St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Now, HSE University attracts the strongest Russian and international applicants. MIEM and the Faculty of Computer Science are doing a lot to develop these areas at the university.
Due to the special nature of the rankings, HSE ranks in the top 151-200 best universities in the world in Computer Science and Information Systems in the QS ranking, taking 3rd place among Russian universities, and in Engineering and Technology the University has placed in 451-500 group.’
The methodology of subject rankings, as well as the World University Rankings, is based on 13 indicators grouped into five categories. However, the weight of the indicators varies depending on the subject.
HSE University took second place in the new 2023 ranking of universities in the digital economy in Moscow and St Petersburg, having lost only to Bauman Moscow State Technical University. HSE University outperformed specialised IT universities such as Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (third place) and ITMO University (fifth place), as well as Moscow State University (fourth place).
Two researchers from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science—Aibek Alanov, Junior Research Fellowat the Centre of Deep Learning and Bayesian Methods, Research Fellow at AIRI; and Pavel Braslavski, Associate Professor, Senior Research Fellow at the Laboratory for Models and Methods of Computational Pragmatics—are among the winners of the 2023Yandex ML Prize (formerly the Ilya Segalovich Award).
HSE University is this year’s leading Russian university in 11 subjects in the Shanghai Ranking. In seven of these, the university is the only Russian higher education institution to appear. This year, the university was ranked among the top universities for Communications for the first time and returned to the ranking for Sociology.
HSE University has risen 17 places in the list of top world universities and remains among the top five Russian universities in the Three University Missions Moscow International University Ranking (MosIUR).
SuperJob has published its annual ranking of Russian universities by salary earned by young professionals working in finance and economics. The ranking was based on data on university graduates for the period 2017–2022.
In 2023, HSE University took first place in the ‘Three University Missions’ subject rankings in economics, sociology, management and psychology. The university also entered the top three in terms of the number of subjects covered by the rankings.
The ‘Expert’ analytical centre has published its ranking of the publication activity of Russian universities for 2023. HSE University has improved its position in six subjects and two narrow sections.
In early April, the final round of the engineering profile of the Moscow Pre-Professional Olympiad was held at HSE MIEM. Fifty teams (about 200 school students) from Moscow took part in the competition. As a result, 52 participants received awards.
HSE University took first place in the 2022 ranking of the top universities in Russia according to HeadHunter, the biggest online recruitment company in Russia. Its rankings are based on employer demand for graduates of Russian universities whose CVs are available on the hh.ru website.
Every spring, HSE University’s Faculty of Computer Science, which this year turns nine years old, traditionally opens its doors and invites everyone to a festival. This time, more than 20 events with over 2,000 registered participants were held between April 8th and 16th as part of the Days of Computer Science.
