International Council Recognizes HSE as Leader in Project 5-100
The Higher School of Economics was recognized as a leader among Project 5-100 universities following a recent session held by the Council on Competitiveness Enhancement of Leading Russian Universities among Global Research and Education Centers. The session took place in Yekaterinburg on October 27-28 and was chaired by Olga Golodets, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.
Council members considered roadmaps aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Project 5-100 universities in 2018-2020. In particular, the Council analyzed the universities’ achievements in the programme and the presence of a clear priority system. HSE demonstrated one of the best results in the rankings by field of study, having entered the Top 100 in four subjects. HSE also presented a viable development strategy that received high marks by the Council. The university roadmap was presented by Yaroslav Kuzminov, HSE Rector; Vadim Radaev, First Vice Rector; Maria Yudkevich, Vice Rector; Igor Chirikov, Vice Rector; and Irina Karelina, Director of Strategic Planning.
‘We are witnessing sustainable dynamics in almost all universities. All 21 universities are continuing their participation in the programme, and all of them will receive funding’, Olga Golodets told journalists covering the session. ‘The universities have been split into three groups. The leaders have demonstrated stable dynamics and a quantum leap. We can see a breakthrough even in the areas we hadn’t expected. For example, the Higher School of Economics is successful in the sociology and political science rankings, where Russian universities hadn’t been represented previously’.
The Council is a permanent advisory body that was established as a platform to consider issues affecting leading Russian universities’ development with a view to enhancing their competitiveness among international research and education centres. The Council includes both Russian and international representatives of the academic community, public officials responsible for educational reform, and internationally renowned experts in higher education.

A team of HSE researchers—Nataliya Matveeva, Ivan Sterligov, and Maria Yudkevich—have analyzed the research activity of universities participating in Russia’s Academic Excellence Project 5-100. Overall, the quality of publications of these universities has improved. Collectively, participating universities have tripled their number of publications in reputable journals in the past three years, and researchers have begun to collaborate with each other more frequently. The study was published in the Journal of Informetrics.
HSE University Confirmed as Top Performer in Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100
Initiated in 2013, the Russian federal initiative, Academic Excellence Project 5-100, aims to maximize the competitive position of leading Russian universities in the global research and education market. On October 26, the Project Council concluded its seventh annual meeting in Moscow. At the meeting, delegations from participating universities presented reports of their progress in improving their international competitive edge.
Sharing Best Practices in Internationalisation at the EAIE Annual Conference in Seville
On September 12-15, HSE took part in the 29th Annual Conference of the European Association of International Education, which was held this year in Seville, Spain. As a part of Study in Russia, a joint exhibition pavilion organized by the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100, HSE held over 90 meetings with current and potential partners to discuss student mobility and other cooperation opportunities.

HSE has become one of three Russian universities to receive maximum points for the implementation of the Russian Academic Excellence Project. These results were announced following a meeting of the Council on Enhancing the Competitiveness of Leading Russian Universities among the Global Rresearch and Education Centres.
