Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course introduces students to the key concepts, methods, and findings at the intersection of behavioral genetics and education. Particular attention is given to the critical interpretation of research evidence, as well as to the opportunities and limitations of applying genetic research in educational contexts. By the end of the course, students will be able to read and critically evaluate academic literature in behavioral genetics, analyze twin and molecular genetic data, assess the potential and limitations of genetic research for educational practice, and communicate these issues effectively to both professional and non-specialist audiences.
Learning Objectives
- Provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical foundations, key concepts, and research methods of behavioral genetics as applied to education
- Develop students' ability to critically evaluate findings from twin and molecular genetic studies and to interpret their implications for educational research and practice
- Equip students with the methodological skills required to analyze and interpret behavioral genetic data using contemporary quantitative approaches
- Foster an evidence-based understanding of the opportunities, limitations, and ethical considerations associated with the application of genetic research in educational contexts
- Develop students' ability to communicate behavioral genetic evidence and its educational implications effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Defines the key terms in human genetics, such as DNA, RNA, chromosomes, transcription, translation, etc.
- Explains the findings of behavioral genetic research in the context of education to the broad audience
- Interprets the findings of behavioral genetic research in the context of education correctly
- Uses ACE/ADE modelling, candidate gene approach and GWAS approach for the analysis of the genetic data
