Course Syllabus
Abstract
The discipline is designed for students of all educational programs of the first year of study at the Higher School of Economics who speak English at the B1 – B1+ level.
The purpose of the course is to develop students' foreign language communicative competence at least at the B2 level, which will ensure practical command of English for the purposes of interpersonal and intercultural communication. Discussing modern achievements and problems of the global world, reading authentic texts on current issues will allow students to develop the ability to express their opinions on various topics. The course also involves the systematization of the lexical and grammatical material provided by the program, as well as familiarization with the format of Integrative exam. Important tasks for the development of oral and written language competencies are the formation of skills to produce clear and logical oral monologue presentations, write a logical and coherent paragraph, and make a written description of two types of graphs - line graph and bar chart.
The main teaching material used in the learning process is the "New Language Leader" Upper-Intermediate by D. Cotton, et, al. within the framework of which the following topics are expected to be studied: 1. Communication. 2. Environment. Environmental protection. 3. Sport. Great athletes. Types of sports.
Learning Objectives
- The goal of the course is to develop students’ foreign‑language communicative competence (linguistic, sociolinguistic, sociocultural, discursive, and strategic) at a level no lower than B2+ / C1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR), as well as to foster academic skills necessary for using English in academic, scientific, and professional activities, further studies at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, and for conducting research in a chosen field.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- A student uses active vocabulary related to the topic under study, is able to construct a structured monological statement on a given topic, is able to complete reading and listening tasks in the appropriate format, and is able to complete written tasks in the appropriate format.

Assessment Elements
- Written AssessmentAt least one test in each of the following areas: reading, listening, vocabulary and grammar, and essay writing.
- Oral AssessmentOne monologue on a given topic and one participation in a conversation with answers to questions.
- Independent workThe tasks that students complete at home, as well as in an online format.
- Final AssessmentThe forms of final assessment in Module 2 are listening comprehension and writing a paragraph.
