Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is the third part of the Advanced English course for general communication purposes, designed for students who have an English level of B2 to B2+. The goal of the course is to develop students' foreign language communicative competence to at least level C1. Studying a wide range of relevant issues of modern life will enable students to speak freely on various topics. The program includes working with contemporary authentic reading and listening texts, systematizing knowledge of English grammar, and familiarizing students with formats of some international English exams. Key skills to be developed include producing clear and logical oral monologues, writing essays of various types in accordance with international exam formats, and describing different types of graphs in writing. The basic educational complex used is “New Language Leader” Advanced, which covers the following topics: Unit 8: Journalism and Media (news in mass media, professional qualities of journalists, social communication tools); Unit 9: Law and Society (codes of conduct in different countries and cultures, juvenile justice, international migration and social laws, new legislative initiatives); Unit 10: Art and Entertainment (cultural events: exhibitions, performances, concerts, music and its impact, new technologies and the entertainment industry, reality shows); Unit 11: Business and Economics (economic volatility, the Fair Trade movement, microfinance organizations, business negotiations); Unit 12: Science and Nature (life on Mars, synthetic materials and nature, humans in the biosphere, the planet and the role of biological species, genetic engineering). The final assessment in module 3 includes tasks in the format of international exams across all communication skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Successful completion of the English course should enable students to obtain any international certificate confirming their readiness and ability to study in international higher education programs.
