Course Syllabus

Abstract

The proposed discipline is designed for all second-year students at the Higher School of Economics who speak English at the B1 – B1+ level. The purpose of the course is to develop students' foreign language communicative competence at least at the B2 level, which will ensure practical command of English for the purposes of interpersonal and intercultural communication. Discussing modern achievements and problems of the global world, reading authentic texts on current issues will allow students to develop the ability to express their opinions on various topics. The course also involves the systematization of the lexical and grammatical material provided by the program, as well as familiarization with the format of Independent English Exam. Important tasks for the development of oral and written language competencies are the formation of skills to produce clear and logical oral monologues, write essays of various types in the format of Independent English Exam, and make written descriptions of various types of graphs. The main teaching material used in the learning process is the “New Language Leader” Upper-Intermediate, which involves the study of the following topics: 9. Art. 10. Psychology. 11. Cultures. 12. Technology.

  • The goal of the course is to develop students’ foreign‑language communicative competence (linguistic, sociolinguistic, sociocultural, discursive, and strategic) at a level no lower than B2+ / C1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR), as well as to foster academic skills necessary for using English in academic, scientific, and professional activities, further studies at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, and for conducting research in a chosen field.

  • A student uses active vocabulary related to the topic under study, is able to construct a structured monological statement on a given topic, is able to complete reading and listening tasks in the appropriate format, and is able to complete written tasks in the appropriate format.

    Reading, listening, vocabulary and grammar tests, essay writing.

    Oral assignments include monological statements on each of the topics studied, as well as answers to questions.

    Tests and other assignments that students complete at home.
  • non-blocking Final Assessment
    The test consists of 3 parts: listening, reading, and writing. 0 points in case of cheating / using AI.
