Abstract

The course "Academic Writing (in English)" aims to develop students' foreign language communicative competence and to advance academic literacy, essential for using English in educational, scientific, and professional activities. This competence is highly important for further studies in Master's and PhD programs, as well as for conducting research in the chosen field. A core component of the course is preparing students to write and defend the project proposal for their Final Diploma Thesis in English, a mandatory requirement for students of all educational programs. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: • Identify and apply the features of academic discourse in both written and oral communication. • Search for, communicate and critically evaluate information from scholarly sources. • Compose and properly format academic texts on their chosen research topic. • Deliver effective presentations on the research topic and participate in academic discussions.

Learning Objectives

Preparing students to write the Project Proposal in English and to deliver its oral defence before the examination committee
Introducing students to the foundations of modern academic discourse
Developing critical thinking through engagement with English-language scholarly sources
Building the ability to discuss and argue for one's research perspective within the professional field

Expected Learning Outcomes

Identifies the characteristic features of an academic text; compares formal and informal styles of presenting information.
Is able to describe the organization of the Project Proposal, the structure of its sections and their interrelation, and the formatting requirements
Identifies relevant sources on the research topic; processes the information obtained (using summarization, text compression, analysis, synthesis, and critical evaluation); applies citation rules; employs functional phrases in academic speech.
Justifies the choice of a particular research method; uses the lexical resources necessary for writing the section.
Is proficient in organizing information when presenting obtained or expected results; employs functional phrases appropriate for the section.
Can clearly formulate research aims, objectives, and hypotheses (or research question); employs the appropriate academic language and phrasing for the section
Summarizes the work conducted and outlines directions for further research; uses the appropriate functional phrases for the section
Structures an academic presentation effectively; designs slides in accordance with established requirements; uses presentation-ready academic language
Identifies the structural components of an abstract, distinguishes between abstract types, and demonstrates a command of the relevant terminology for writing the section
