Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course develops foreign language communicative competence at the B1+ level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR), specifically linguistic, sociolinguistic, sociocultural, discursive, and strategic competences. It also focuses on developing academic skills necessary for using the English language in academic, scientific, and professional activities. The course aims to enhance communication skills at a level required for professional duties, conducting business meetings, negotiations, and presentations in the international business sphere. The discipline is taught with a modular structure throughout the first and second modules of the first year. Each thematic module follows a similar structure, centered around discussion topics that correspond to language proficiency levels. These modules integrate knowledge from various disciplines such as humanities, natural sciences, and economics. They expand information and language resources by considering possible contexts of professional activities and communication spheres among highly educated professionals. The focus is on developing specific macro and micro skills in both oral and written speech, encompassing receptive and productive abilities. The course allows students to work with different types and forms of texts simultaneously, including linear/non-linear, verbal/non-verbal, media, and artistic forms. It encourages independent research work and offers flexibility in adjusting the course workload to accommodate the specific learning situation.
