Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course offers advanced training in qualitative research with a strong focus on research design, fieldwork, and data analysis in educational settings. Students will critically examine and develop their own research questions, designs, and field strategies, integrating methodological reasoning with practical challenges of entering and navigating the field. The course covers educational ethnography, action research, and narrative approaches to interviewing. Particular attention is given to reflexivity, research ethics, teamwork during fieldwork, and the practical craft of developing interview guides and observation protocols. Throughout the course, students will work with their own projects, receiving structured feedback on research design and analytic decisions.
Learning Objectives
- This course develops students' ability to design, conduct, and critically evaluate qualitative research in educational settings. It emphasizes methodological reasoning, reflexive fieldwork, and rigorous qualitative data analysis through practical engagement with authentic research problems.

- Formulate researchable qualitative questions appropriate for educational research
- Communicate methodological reasoning clearly in oral and written forms
- Design qualitative data collection instruments, including interview guides and observation protocols
