Course Syllabus

Abstract

Neuroscience in Education is a new interdisciplinary field that brings together the study of the brain with research in psychology and education. The field is aimed to use the knowledge about the brain to make learning effective and engaging. The course will introduce students to the main research areas in the field. It will be useful both for those interested in pursuing an academic career in educational neuroscience and for those who simply want to broaden their knowledge. The former will learn about current research conducted in Russia, the neuroimaging and neuromodulation methods available to researchers, and the research centers they can join at this stage. The latter will learn to debunk neuromyths, distinguish scientifically grounded ideas from hype, and find reliable information on questions of interest.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • Support students interested in pursuing research in the field of neuroscience in education in planning their academic trajectory. As a part of the course, students will become familiar with (1) the main areas of research in neuroscience in education, (2) neuroimaging and neuromodulation methods widely used in this research, and (3) Russian research centers and laboratories where such research can be conducted. Students will be able to identify their own research interests in the neuroscience in education, formulate a topic for their own research project, and, if they wish, continue working on it after completing the course.
  • Teach students to critically evaluate educational products whose creators claim that they are based on the neuroscientific approach. As part of the course, students will learn about common neuromyths in education, as well as the possibilities and limitations of current neuroscience research. This knowledge will help them distinguish marketing claims from evidence-based approaches.

  • Explains the principles underlying various neuroimaging and neuromodulation methods (EEG, MRI, fNIRS, MEG, tES, TMS)
  • Defines the field of neuroscience in education, describes the challenges it faces, and provides examples of integrating findings from neuroscience research into educational practice.
  • Evaluates the advantages and limitations of different neuroimaging methods in the context of specific research questions.
  • Provides arguments for and against the use of cognitive training to improve educational outcomes.
  • Critically evaluates the inappropriate use of neurotechnologies in education, drawing on knowledge from neuroscience, psychology, and education sciences
