Abstract

This discipline is part of the elective educational tracks offered to Bachelor's and Specialist's degree students choosing their optional English course in accordance with the Concept for the Development of Foreign Language Communicative Competence of HSE students. The discipline aims to build students’ confidence in using English in various real-life situations and contexts and develop their language skills and communicative competences to the upper-intermediate level (HSE Scale: 50-59). The course is designed to assist students in becoming independent users by developing their reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills, as well as attaining excellence in vocabulary management and grammatical accuracy. It offers a variety of authentic materials that familiarize students with real-life English expressions and scenarios, provides an array of contemporary topics for discussion, and develops 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, text analysis, and digital literacy. Furthermore, the course establishes a solid general English foundation for future academic studies, research, or success in learning English for academic and specific purposes. Within the course, students are expected to do home assignments and take tests in various formats, including but not limited to lexical-grammar, reading, listening, writing, and speaking tests. The course grading formula does not include blocking elements. The prerequisite for course enrolment is a minimum score of 30 points on the Placement Test.
