Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course develops students' ability to think critically about research and make informed methodological decisions throughout the research process. Rather than presenting research methods as a collection of techniques, the course examines how research questions emerge, how knowledge is built through engagement with the literature, and how different qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches address different types of research problems. Students learn to justify methodological choices, critically evaluate published research, and understand the philosophical assumptions underlying different research paradigms. The course concludes with contemporary issues in research integrity, including open science, reproducibility, publication bias, preregistration, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in research.
Learning Objectives
- To develop students' understanding of research as a process of making informed methodological decisions grounded in theory, evidence, and the nature of the research problem.
- To equip students with conceptual frameworks for critically evaluating research literature and selecting appropriate qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods approaches to answer different types of research questions.
- To foster critical and responsible research thinking by introducing students to contemporary principles of research integrity, open science, and ethical research practice.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Formulate and justify research questions by integrating theoretical perspectives, practical needs, and existing evidence.
- Evaluate the quality, credibility, and limitations of published research using contemporary standards of research integrity and open science.
- Justify methodological decisions throughout the research process, from framing the problem to selecting an appropriate research design.
- Critically compare qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches and explain the types of questions each approach is best suited to answer.
- Provide arguments about the quality, credibility, and limitations of published research using contemporary standards of research integrity and open science.
