Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course provides students with the basic concepts of psychological and educational measurement: theories of measurement, test and item development, reliability and validity. The course starts with a historical review of the development of measurement in psychology and shows how the basic concepts changed over time. The most important issues of these concepts are discussed. The students will learn the main steps they need to go through in order to design a test or questionnaire and to ensure their psychometric quality. The guidance we use is aligned with the latest editions of the Educational measurement and the Standards of psychological measurement by APA and NCME. During the course the students will apply their theoretical knowledge to the development of their own questionnaire. The students will learn what such item chatecteristics as difficulty and discrimination are, how to calculate them, and how to deal with errors of measurement. We will dedicate a significant amount of time to the interpretation of test scores. The social consequences of standardized testing will also be discussed. The students have to be ready for extensive reading of texts on general methodological issues of measurement in social science as well as for group work and discussion.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • To enable students to design a psychological test or questionnaire, from construct definition and operationalization to psychometric evaluation and the preparation of a psychometric report.
  • To develop students' ability to design validation studies and select appropriate sources of validity evidence to support the interpretation of test scores.
  • To develop students' ability to critically interpret psychometric reports, evaluate the quality of psychological and educational instruments, and identify additional evidence needed to support their use.
  • To enable students to evaluate the quality of published psychological and educational tests using the EFPA Test Review Model.
  • To provide students with an understanding of how developments in psychological theory have shaped approaches to measurement and assessment, from behaviorism to contemporary competency-based, fairness-oriented, and AI-assisted assessment.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Names and describes the stages of test development.
  • Explains how behaviorism and cognitivism influenced the development of psychological and educational measurement.
  • Defines a construct both semantically and operationally.
  • Designs a validation study to gather validity evidence.
  • Interprets test reliability coefficients.
  • Interprets the psychometric properties of test items.
  • Provides a reasoned evaluation of the quality of test items.
  • Evaluates the design of a study for assessing the structural validity of a test.
  • Identifies the applications and limitations of AI in measurement and assessment.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Homework 1. Monitoring New Research Publications
Your task is to establish a regular routine for monitoring new research publications in your field. Install the Wispar app (an abstract aggregator for scientific publications) or use another tool that allows you to keep track of newly published research. Then subscribe to several academic journals relevant to your area of study. At least two of these journals should focus on psychological or educational measurement (e.g., Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, Applied Measurement in Education, etc.). In Wispar, you can save articles that interest you by swiping right and remove articles that are not relevant by swiping left. Each week, before the deadline, submit the title and abstract of one or two articles that you found particularly interesting using the designated submission form. There are no right or wrong answers for this assignment. It is graded solely on completion. Successfully completing the assignment will earn one point toward your final course grade. The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop the habit of regularly monitoring new research publications. This skill will become particularly important in Module 2, where you will take the course Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods and will be expected to identify and review recent literature independently.
  • non-blocking Homework 2. Validation Essay
  • non-blocking Final Oral Examination
At the end of the course, you will take an oral examination. During the examination, you will answer the questions and complete the tasks from a randomly assigned examination ticket. Each ticket consists of: - one theoretical question (the list of possible questions is provided and corresponds to the course topics); - two multiple-choice questions; - a discussion of your Homework 2 (Validation Essay).
