Course Syllabus
Abstract
The discipline refers to the variable educational tracks offered to students of the curricula for bachelor's and master's degree at choice while mastering the optional course of English in accordance with the Concept of developing English-speaking communicative competence of students of Higher School of Economics — National Research University https://www.hse.ru/docs/381549301.html The curriculum is for the 1st year students (a bachelor's degree program "Jurisprudence"and "Jurisprudence: Private law"). The curriculum is designed to develop foreign-language communicative and professional competencies that is based on "Regulations FOR Interim and Ongoing Assessments of Students at National Research University Higher School of Economics" and "Concept of Development of English-Language Communicative Competence HSE Students". The course is focused on basic professional terminology and knowledge of legal professions, litigation and arbitration, criminal and company within the framework of Anglo-Saxon and American law. The course supports both classroom and independent learning (online course). There are no blocking controls.
Learning Objectives
- The aims of the course are: to improve student’s ability to read and understand law journal articles, commercial legislation, legal texts, legal correspondence;
- - to develop an understanding of the law and consolidate language skills.
- - to increase student’s comprehension of spoken English (legal topics in lectures, presentations, interviews, discussions, etc);
- - to strengthen student’s speaking and writing skills in a range of situations typical of the study of law and the practice of law (client interview, act out in court etc.);
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Expected learning outcomes (ELO) to be assessed:knows the general overview of university law courses as its starting point and practical skills required for careers in law, and different routes to legal profession;
- distinguishes the main types of legal professions and lawyers, especially in common law countries;
- knows the main areas of law in common law;
- distinguishes legal terminology and the context of its use;
- uses legal vocabulary more accurately, concisely and effectively;
- communicates legal concepts and information confidently and easily;
- develops skills in giving a presentation (informative/descriptive/argumentative/persuasive speech)
- uses legal English in discussions and presentations confident in their ability and knowledge.
- knows the range of ways to handle legal disputes; types and stages of litigation; types of ADR methods; distinguishes legal terminology and the context of its use; uses legal vocabulary more accurately, concisely and effectively; communicates legal concepts and information confidently and easily; organizes and presents ideas and statements in a clear, logical and appropriate way.
- knows the difference in concepts and terminology between criminal law and civil law;
- distinguishes crimes and torts (civil wrongs); knows the range of crimes and their categories; distinguishes street crimes and white-collar crimes, identity theft and its types; knows the purpose of punishment and types of punishment; uses legal vocabulary more accurately, concisely and effectively; organizes and presents ideas and statements in a clear, logical and appropriate way; detect logical fallacies in arguments
- knows the main forms of business organization; the factors that could influence the choice of business; their advantages and disadvantages and disadvantages of each form; uses legal vocabulary more accurately, concisely and effectively; organizes and presents ideas and statements in a clear, logical and appropriate way
- develops understanding of articles, reports, straightforward and specialised texts concerned with contemporary problems at the threshold/vantage/effective operational proficiency level
