Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course explores methodological problems involved in different types of political science research. It is focused on development of design of PhD dissertation research and results in the research proposal to be approved by the Academic Council of the Doctoral School. The course aims at developing or enhancing the following skills: • designing a research project (PhD dissertation research), including: • formulating a researchable question • writing an effective literature review • fitting the research question into an appropriate theory • sampling strategy • selecting data and designing methods • writing a research proposal The course consists from distant modules at dpo.hse.ru and discussions in the class. The course is taught in English. But students who are going to write their thesis in Russian can write their papers for this course in Russian, if they wish.

  • Is able to access critically designs of research proposed by colleagues.
  • Is able to chose the strategy for the proposed research
  • Is able to discuss the choice of research question, strategy, theories, concepts, methods proposed by colleagues
  • Is able to distinguish between different kinds of theory. Understands their role in research.
  • Is able to elaborate a design of the proposed research
  • Is able to elaborate the design of research for future thesis.
  • Is able to explain the functions of concepts, theories, hypothesis and models in different types of social research.
  • Is able to formulate the research problem and research question
  • Is able to provide arguments for the proposed research problem
  • Is able to write a research proposal as text
  • Knows how types of research questions correspond to research strategies.
  • Knows the principles of analysis of relevant literature; can do its screening to reveal the research problem
