Mr. Tae Ik Chung was inaugurated as Chairman of the Korean Council on Foreign Relations as of Jan, 1st, 2014.
Amid grave concerns in international society, North Korea conducted its 4th nuclear test in January, 2016, resulting in a tremendous shock to the geopolitical contour in Northeast Asia (NEA). Moreover, despite condemnations from many countries in the world and even tougher sanctions against its nuclear adventurism, Pyongyang dares to escalate security crisis over the Korean Peninsula by continuously making military provocations including the launching of long-range missile and conducting SLBM test over the past few months. Besides the North’s nuclear issue, the Republic of Korea (ROK) is faced with various challenges: historical revisionisms based on nationalism, territorial and maritime disputes, and great power rivalry in the NEA region. As such, Korean diplomacy is now confronted with formidable challenges caused by geopolitical transformations in the region. In the midst of such a changing diplomatic and security environment in NEA, the ROK is committed to maintaining peace and stability the Korean Peninsula, and further paving the way for peaceful reunification of the two Koreas. Taking into consideration such a vision, the ROK should concentrate on the major diplomatic agendas which will be considered in the lecture. The speaker will also present his view on Russia's role in the Northeast Asia security in the light of the recent geopolitical changes in the region, including those induced by the North Korea's nuclear tests.
The lecture will be delivered in Korean with the consecutive translation into Russian and followed by a Q&A session.
The venue of the event is Building B, 31 Shabolovka Street, room 503 (conference hall).
To register to the lecture please fill in the electronic form before 17.00, May 17, 2016. We would kindly ask non-HSE participants to bring their passports to enter the building.
