students from 31 countries and 85 Russian regions have signed up for the 'Vyshaya Proba' Olympiad this year. This is 12,000 more than last year and a record number for the entire history of the Olympiad.
As each student can participate in competitions on several subjects, the total number of registrations is 156,578.
The most popular competitions are on Russian language, social studies, mathematics and foreign languages, with 22,847, 22,127, 20,712 and 19,933 participants, respectively. Students have expressed interest in a newcomer in the list of subjects covered at the 'Vyshaya Proba' Olympiad – eastern languages; about 500 people have registered for the Chinese language competition.
Among the registrants are 1,700 students from the CIS and Baltic countries; six students from Poland; three from Bulgaria; and two students each from the United States, Serbia, India, Germany, Turkey and China. Belgium, Vietnam, Greece, Slovakia, Sweden and Japan are each represented by one student.
The 'Vyshaya Proba' Olympiad provides future graduates with the opportunity to enrol in state-funded places at Higher School of Economics outside the admissions competition or receive an equivalent of 100 points on the Unified State Exam in a featured subject based on success at the Olympiad. Students in grades 7-11 are welcome to take part. In the event participants in non-graduating classes win, the following year they are eligible to take part in the second round of the Olympiad right away.
The first (external) stage of the Olympiad begins this weekend. For all subjects other than design, the external stage involves completing tasks in the allotted time. To participate in the design competition, participants must upload their work to their user accounts by December 10.
Ulyana Rusetskaya of Belarus is in her first year at the HSE Art and Design School. She entered HSE University by winning the HSE Global Scholarship Competition (GSC) for foreign citizens in the area of design. The first student contest in game theory has taken place at HSE. Organized by the HSE Group of Young Academic Professionals, it brought together 150 undergraduate and Master’s students from 17 Russian universities, as well as one high school student from Moscow.
In March and April, an HSE Olympiad competition for students and graduates took place in Russia and other countries, including the USA, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Vietnam. About 9,500 people registered for the competition, an increase of 25% over last year. One-third of all participants were HSE students and graduates. The winners of the Olympiad will be at an advantage when applying for HSE’s Master’s programmes corresponding to the competitions they participated in.

In March 2017, International Olympiad Competitions will be held for perspective students interested in studying in Master’s programmes at HSE University. All current undergraduate students and recent university graduates students interested in pursuing a Master’s degree are invited to participate.
