Valery Kalyagin, Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science and Tenured Professor at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, has been named a laureate of the national ‘Professor of the Year’ award in the Central Federal District.

‘Professor of the Year’ is an award given by the Russian Professorial Assembly for outstanding scientific results in the field of education and science. Valery Kalyagin, permanent Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, was awarded the title in the Central Federal District. He received the award for his achievements in research on current problems of fundamental and applied sciences, his success in organising the educational process, and his achievements in international educational and scientific and technical projects.

Prof. Kalyagin was among the founders of the Faculty of Business Informatics and Applied Mathematics at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod (now the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science). He served as the faculty’s dean from 2007 to 2013, during which time it became a centre for training international-level specialists.

Currently, the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science occupies a leading position in research in the field of fundamental and applied mathematics in Nizhny Novgorod.

At Prof. Kalyagin’s initiative and with his direct participation, promising new educational programmes in Business Informatics, Applied Mathematics, and Software Engineering were opened.

It is a great honour for me to receive the prestigious ‘Professor of the Year’ award.

My whole life has been linked with mathematics, teaching, and research. Mathematics became a part of my life at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Gorky University, from which I graduated back in 1974. I understood what science of the highest level was in graduate school at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow University. It was an unforgettable time. An indescribable scientific atmosphere reigned at Moscow State University, where difficult problems were the focus, and new ideas and approaches to solving them were the main value.

We live in unusual times. Mathematics, which was an abstract ‘celestial’ science, is now becoming a necessary tool for creating new high technologies. Participating in this process and passing on knowledge and expertise to new generations gives me great pleasure.
