Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is designed for students placed at a strong B2 level of English proficiency: the students with the minimum score of 60 points on the Placement test. This course is the second part of a three-part Advanced English course for general communication purposes, composed in accordance with the Conceptual Framework for Developing Students’ Foreign Language Competencies in Bachelor’s, Specialist’s, and Master’s Degree Programmes at National Research University Higher School of Economics. The goal of the course is to develop students' foreign language communicative competence to a C1 level. Studying a wide range of relevant topics related to modern life will enable students to communicate freely in different situations and contexts: in study, work and personal life. The course offers an array of contemporary authentic materials for reading and listening to build up confidence and ability to understand real life English. Developing speaking and writing skills focuses on producing clear, logical, and argumentative oral and written discourse. The main teaching materials used are the "New Language Leader" Advanced, covering topics such as: Unit 4. Health and Care: Provision of medical services. Healthy lifestyle. Health of the nation. Healthcare expenditures. Healthcare employment. Professional qualities of a medical worker. Healthcare system in Russia. Unit 5. Fashion and Consumerism: Fashion and social responsibility. Consumer society. Classic design. Fashion industry. Marketing strategies in retail. Unit 6. Technology and Change: Innovative technologies. Public attitudes toward technological progress and innovation. Changing world. Genome editing. 3D printers. Surveillance technologies. Unit 7. People and Ideas: Creativity and creative people. Great thinkers and their ideas. The impact of ideas on human life. Unit 8. Journalism and Media: News in the media. Professional qualities of a journalist. Social media.
The course is offered in Modules 3 and 4, with 80 hours of practical classroom instruction provided. Formative assessment methods in Module 4 include an essay and a monologue. Summative assessment tools at the end of the course consist of reading and writing tasks.
Learning Objectives
- competence to a C1 level in accordance with the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Successful completion of the course should enable the acquisition of any international certificate confirming readiness and ability to study in international higher professional education programs. The intelligent approach to the topics in the course is intended to challenge students and allow them to develop their powers of expression and analysis. The course is based on a broadly communicative approach, with language contextualised in texts and a task-based approach to practice.

- writing a description of a bar chart, improving cohesion in writing, writing a report on a survey

Assessment Elements
- Oral Speech Assessment (OA)
- Written Assessment (WA)Written classroom tasks: reading and listening tests, grammar and vocabulary tests, dictations, writing essays, describing graphs, etc.
- Individual Work Assessment (IWA)Work completed by students at home: written assignments from the textbook, listening and reading tests in exam format, writing a paragraph, describing a graph, oral presentations, etc.
- Final Assessment (FA)Final test. Reading: text 3,000–3,500 ch. Tasks: 1–5 (True/False/Not Given), 6–10 (gap filling). Listening: lecture. Tasks: 1–5 (multiple choice), 6–10 (gap filling). The listening time is 8–10 minutes. The second retake is conducted with a commission of three people and consists of two parts. Written part: 1. Listening to a lecture and completing 10 tasks (filling gaps, completing sentences). The listening time is 8–10 minutes.
