Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is the second part of the Advanced English Language course for general communication purposes and is designed for students with a B2 level of English proficiency. It covers a wide range of current issues in modern life, enabling students to speak freely on various topics. The goal is to develop students' foreign language communicative competence to at least level C1. The program involves working with authentic contemporary texts for reading and listening, as well as systematizing their knowledge of English grammar. It also introduces formats of some international English exams. Key skills to be developed include producing clear and logical oral monologues, writing essays such as ‘Discuss the advantages and disadvantages’ and ‘Discuss both views and give your opinion,’ and describing line graphs, bar charts, and pie charts. The basic teaching materials are "New Language Leader" Advanced, covering topics the following topics: Unit 4: Health and Care (healthcare services, healthy lifestyles, national health, healthcare costs, working in healthcare, professional qualities of medical workers, the healthcare system in Russia); Unit 5: Fashion and Consumerism (fashion and social responsibility, consumer society, classic design, the fashion industry, marketing strategies); Unit 6: Technology and Change (innovative technologies, attitudes toward technological progress, the changing world, genome editing, 3D printing, tracking technologies); Unit 7: People and Ideas (creativity, great thinkers, the influence of ideas on humanity). The course is offered in modules 3 and 4, with 92 hours of practical classroom activities. Current assessment methods in module 3 include describing graphs and writing essays, while final assessment involves reading and writing tasks.
