Course Syllabus
Abstract
This discipline is part of the elective educational tracks offered to Bachelor's and Specialist's degree students choosing their optional English course in accordance with the HSE Concept of Development of Foreign-language Communicative Competence. This discipline aims to enhance language skills for everyday communication. Throughout the course, students develop their listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, along with vocabulary and grammar, through both in-person interactions and online activities. By the end of the course, students will gain the skills and confidence to communicate effectively in English at the upper-intermediate level (HSE Scale 60-69). They will be able to write essays, participate in discussions, answer questions confidently, read both adapted and authentic texts, and understand lectures, podcasts, and everyday conversations. Within the course, students are expected to do home assignments and take tests in various formats, including but not limited to lexical-grammar, reading, listening, writing, and speaking tests. The prerequisite for course enrolment is a minimum score of 30 points in the Interim Assessment.
Learning Objectives
- This course helps students advance to the level of independent users of English for general communicative purposes and boost their language skills and competencies to the upper-intermediate level (HSE Scale 60-69) by improving students’ command of English for interpersonal and intercultural communication, enhancing receptive and productive skills related to general purposes, expanding vocabulary on a variety of topics and grammar structures in use.

- To be able to produce monologues (descriptive/argumentative)

Assessment Elements
- AttendanceAttendance grade is calculated using a 10-point grading scale based on a student’s attendance rate.
- English Grammar and Vocabulary TestStudents take the English Grammar and Vocabulary Test in class. Time - 70 min.
- Home AssignmentHA includes oral and/or written tasks that are assigned to students for independent completion and submission. Students do the tasks at home and either turn them in to their teachers or submit them via Smart LMS for grading.
- Written AssessmentWA consists of minimum 4 tasks of different types, including interim ones (for example, essays, graph descriptions, reviews, reports). WA can also include annotations, emails, listening and reading tasks, grammar and vocabulary tasks at the end of a section or topic. WA refers to written tasks that students do in class.
- Oral AssessmentOA consists of minimum 3 tasks of different types, including interim ones (for example, monologues and discussions) that students do in class.
- Final AssessmentFinal assessment equals to the interim exam which is held in the form of a written test. The exam aims to check whether the student demonstrates the acquisition of the set learning objectives. It includes: Reading (R) and Writing (W). Grading formula: R* 0.4 + W*0.6.
