Term Paper

The Term Paper is submitted during the 1st year of studies and should be accomplished in according with Regulations on Practical Training of Students under Core Bachelor’s, Specialist and Master’s Programmes at HSE University alleged by Academic Council of HSE and by Guidelines for Term Papers and Master`s Theses of the Master`s Programme "Data Analytics and Social Statistics" (previously –“Applied Statistics with Network Analysis”).

Important dates for students preparing their coursework:

• Selecting a major topic, proposing a topic, and coordinating with a supervisor – from September 1 to October 15
• Selecting a topic and approving a preliminary topic in SmartPro – in accordance with the university-wide schedule (to be announced later, usually by November 15)
• Officially assigning the topic – no later than December 15
• Preliminary presentation of the work as part of a research seminar or mentor seminar – by March 30 (end of Module 3) 
• Changing the supervisor (if necessary) – by March 31 
• Clarifying or changing the topic – by April 30
• Final upload of the final work to the LMS for further review – May 31
• Public defense of the thesis – June 23-24 (tentatively at the end of Module 4, dates subject to change)

 

Master's Thesis

The Master`s Thesis is submitted during the 2nd year of studies and should be accomplished in according with Regulations on Practical Training of Students under Core Bachelor’s, Specialist and Master’s Programmes at HSE University,   Regulations on Final State Certification of Students in Bachelor’s, Specialist and Master’s Degree Programmes at National Research University Higher School of Economics and by Guidelines for Term Papers and Master`s Theses of the Master`s Programme “Data Analytics and Social Statistics”

Important dates for students preparing their final qualifying work (master's thesis):

• Selecting the main topic, proposing the topic, and coordinating with the supervisor – from September 1 to October 15
• Selecting the topic and approving the preliminary topic in SmartPro – in accordance with the university schedule (will be announced later, usually by November 15)
• Officially assigning the topic – no later than December 15
• Presenting the final qualifying work (first pre-defense) – by March 30 (end of Module 3)
• Changing the supervisor (if necessary) – by March 31 
• Clarifying or changing the topic – by April 30
• Conducting the second pre-defense of the final qualifying work – May 12-13 (tentatively, dates subject to change)
• Final upload of the final work to the LMS for further review – May 31
• Public defense of the final qualifying work – June 16-17 (dates subject to change)

Students' work on theses and final qualification papers with their supervisor is regulated by deadlines within the framework of the mentor's seminars, research and development sessions, and the student's individual work plan, as agreed upon with the supervisor. As a rule, the mandatory stages of working with a supervisor include (but are not limited to):

• Submission by the student to the supervisor of the first draft of the structure and plan of the work in the form of a Research Proposal – no later than December 25
• Submission of the first draft of the complete work to the supervisor (with subsequent corrections and revisions) – no later than March 1
• Submission of the final version of the work to the supervisor – in April-May, but no later than May 30 (please note that late submission of the work on May 30 will not leave time for revision if there are any comments, as the final work is uploaded to the LMS by May 31)
