At HSE Online Day, online bachelor’s and master’s students learned more about the university environment and online social life, attended lectures on careers and skills from HSE and industry experts, and participated in a quiz by the Career Centre. The event took place on October 17.

Nikita Anisimov, HSE Rector, Sergey Roshchin, Vice Rector and Head of the Laboratory for Labour Market Studies, and Dmitry Shminke, Deputy Vice Rector, talked about the opportunities available to HSE online students, the advantages of digital degree studies, and extracurricular activities at the university.

Nikita Anisimov

Nikita Anisimov said that the university’s ‘fifth campus’, which delivers its programmes completely online, not only combines the resources of all the ‘physical’ campuses in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Perm, but also lets everyone feel like part of HSE University and obtain a full-fledged education from anywhere in the world. ‘HSE Online erases geographical borders. Today, we have students from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, the United States, Canada, Peru, Germany, Turkey, and others. We are thankful that the online format provides this opportunity and allows everyone to see each other within arm’s reach, almost as if we were sitting at the same table. The community of online students at HSE University grows bigger every year, and its geographical scope is expanding. Joint events and activities help us to stick together online and create new projects and collaborations at the global level,’ said the HSE rector.

Sergey Roshchin

Sergey Roshchin said: ‘I hope that after enrolling in a programme, you will not confine yourself to its community, but will use all the opportunities the university has to offer. There are various technologies that allow for online involvement in the diverse life of HSE. I believe that education is not something given, but something gained. I hope that you will be able to gain competencies, knowledge, professional networking opportunities, and involvement in activities at our university. If you want to go beyond the online world, the doors of HSE are always open: the university operates for you in the traditional in-person format as well. The “fifth campus” provides the opportunity to study in both virtual and real spaces.’

‘We started with our first English-taught online programme, Master of Data Science, in 2020, which enrolled 231 students. Today, the number of our online programmes has grown to 21, and there are now more than 2,800 students. Among them are graduates of schools and bachelor’s programmes, experienced specialists, business owners, the founders of startups, and those who are improving their competencies or changing their career track. We ask students for feedback, continuously analyse the labour market, and improve our programmes accordingly. And today, I can confidently say that studying at HSE Online fully meets the expectations of applicants and students. We focus on real cases, offer an individual development track, a lot of practical work in groups and, importantly, it is possible to study without neglecting the other parts of your life’, the HSE rector said. Students and graduates of online programmes continue their careers in leading companies such as Sber, Alfa-Bank, Yandex, Gazprom, Tinkoff, Intel and others. They also successfully implement their own projects.

The career part of the event focused on two audiences: those seeking to change their professional field and those who want to further develop in their field, improve their skills, and build effective career strategies. The Career Centre hosted a quiz on individual professional track development with the help of HSE University.

Olga Gaevskaya, Head of the Office for Alumni Relations and Career Development, spoke about the professional development services available to students and the HSE alumni community. Larisa Kolchina, talent development director at Kept and coach for top executives, gave a presentation on the competencies of a successful professional. She talked about how to create a competitive and supportive environment. Evgenia Evteeva, head of student projects at VK Education, talked about conscious career management: how to build a personal growth plan, objectively assess oneself and set career goals, and communicate with HR.
