The head of the Political Sciences programme, Associate Professor at the HSE Perm Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Yuri Vasilenko has given a series of lectures on the ‘History of Russian civilization and Russia’s contemporary politics’ at universities in Spain.

Junior research fellow Marco Colosio spoke to The HSE Look about the Journal Club on cognitive neuroscience and neuroeconimics at the Centre for Cognition and Decision Making.

On the 15th February 2015, the School of Foreign Languages held its first ‘olympiad’ for students and graduates applying for places on the new Master’s programme Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communications. The competition was open to 4th and 5th year students and recent university graduates.

From the 18th to 21st February the biggest American (in fact international - like the American Association of Political Science) professional association of researchers in international relations, global politics and comparative politics, theInternational Studies Association held it’s 56th annual convention, this time in New Orleans. As in recent years, more than 6,000 participants came from all over the world.

The latest issue of the HSE LooK is dedicated to research life at HSE. The International Laboratory for Applied Network Research shares the experience of starting up a research unit and successful collaboration with colleagues and students. Marco Colosio, a PhD student at the Centre for Cognition and Decision Making, moderates the Journal Club in cognitive neuroscience and neuroeconomics and shares his experience of working in this discussion group. The editors also congratulate Assistant Professors Udara Peiris and Dina Balalaeva on the acceptance of their articles for publication.

On March 9-15th HSE Extreme Sports Club is organizing the fourth ski and snowboarding trip  to Elbrus and Cheget for HSE students, graduates and staff, and friends. Registration is open until March 7th, 2015.

From January 30 to February 1, 2015, the 8^th Contemporary Dance Festival ‘Power of Silence’ took place in St. Petersburg. Fifty-three dancers and dance teams from all over Russian participated in the contest. Three prizes were awarded in the ‘Solo and Duets’ nomination: for the best choreography, the best female dancer, and the best male dancer. Sona Hovsepyan was named as best choreographer, and Diana Mukhamedshina, member of the Dance Company, won the prize for best female performer.

On January 22-23 Norway’s University of Tromsø held the ‘Norwegian Graduate Student Conference in Linguistics and Philology (NoSLiP),’ organized by the Norwegian Graduate Researcher School in Linguistics and Philology.

In September 2014, new international professors and postdocs joined the Faculty of Mathematics. January issue of 'The HSE LooK' welcomes aboard Assistant Professor Satoshi Kondo.

Marie Arsalidou joined HSE’s Faculty of Social Sciences as Assistant Professor in September 2014. She is getting ready to launch a wide-ranging developmental study examining cognitive capacities in school children. Here she talks about what working at HSE and living in Moscow is like for an international professor.

The article ‘Academic Historians in Russian Media: A Selfie-session’ by HSE Professor Irina Savelieva and postgraduate student Zarina Gatina has been published in the journal of the Polish Academy of Sciences ‘Rozprawy z Dziejów Oświaty’.
