On June 15, the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the School of International Affairs hosted Denis Stukal, a former HSE graduate, who gave a Guest Lecture to the students of the Parallel Degree Bachelor's Programme in International Relations.

Back in the days, Denis was not only an HSE student, but also a lecturer here. He used to teach several math and applied stats courses at the Department of Political Science. Now, Denis is not a frequent guest in Moscow any more, since he is finishing his PhD in Politics at New York University (USA).

In his talk, Denis focused on the use of Data Science in International Relations research. Specifically, he covered the fundamentals of data analysis and causal inference and their application in the field of IR. The topic that provoked the largest interest of the audience and even a heated debate was the role of the Internet and social media in politics and IR.

The discussion also involved a number of faculty members including Assistant Professor Ekaterina V. Talalakina, Senior Lecturer Andrei S. Skriba, and Junior Research Fellow Dmitry P. Novikov, as well as another visiting scholar and Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Megan Metzger.
