Our student Augusto Dalla Ragione visited Barcelona Summer School of Demography - 2019 and workshop on Data Visualization held at the National Institute of Demographic Studies in Paris

Since last July, I started delving into the world of R, a powerful statistical programming language. My kick-off with it was in July at the Barcelona Summer School of Demography, a 4-weeks, 4-sessions summer couse held at the Centre of Demographic Studies of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where I attended two sessions, Demography with R and Spatial Analysis with R. The intensive course provided me with core skills of basic programming, demographic analysis, and map-making using R, which then I continued studying on my own, and eventually adopted it as the most used statistical tool in my academic endeavours. An October workshop on Data Visualization held at the National Institute of Demographic Studies in Paris, taught by former HSE student Iliya Kashnitsky, provided me with additional knowledge and skills related to the presentation and visualization of demographic data in an effective and elegant way. R has a fantastic and amazingly active internet community, easy to follow on social media, and a large amount of free learning material available on the net. Although the learning curve can be sometimes steep, the use of R is eventually very satisfying, and I look to furtherly expand my knowledge of it while pursuing the academic path.
