users signed up for HSE courses through Coursera and Russia’s National Open Education Platform.

HSE has been in partnership with Coursera, the world’s leading international educational website, since 2014. At present, HSE courses in economics, applied mathematics, data sciences, psychology, the humanities, etc. are available via this platform. Furthermore, out of the 46 HSE courses available, 14 are provided in English. Also, HSE has developed three specializations for Coursera, providing instruction on how to solve practical problems.

A total of 813,873 users from 195 countries are now registered for HSE courses. What’s more, 32% of those registered for courses in Russian are from outside of the Russian Federation, while this figure for courses in English comes to 93%. The Top-5 countries for HSE’s online courses in English are the US, India, China, Germany and the UK, while for courses in Russia they are Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, the US, and Germany.

The most popular HSE courses on Coursera are in economics (35% of subscribers), followed by computer sciences (25%) and mathematics (12%). According to surveys conducted by the HSE Centre for Institutional Research during the first half of 2016, 92% of course subscribers would recommend the service after completing their programmes.

HSE has already posted 24 courses on the Russian National Open Education Platform, a service that offers online courses on basic subjects commonly taught at Russian academic institutions. So far, students from over 3,000 universities have accessed these courses.

HSE is the clear leader on this platform with respect to the size of its audience and the number of courses available. For instance, our university’s courses count for 45% of subscribers and almost one fourth of all its total courses (24 out of 107). Over the last year, around 180,000 users signed up for HSE courses through this platform. Furthermore, six HSE courses were among the Top-10 most popular offerings on the platform for the 2015/2016 academic year.

HSE Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin comments: 'HSE considers online education to be one of the priority areas of development in modern education. It not only helps us to carry out our mission within the walls of the university, but also offer the best academic products with the finest professors to a wide range of course subscribers in an easy-to-use format. Subscribers may use our courses to boost their qualifications and include them in their own educational programmes, as well as simply expand their knowledge and horizons.'

Understanding Russian Communication: Online and in Private

How Russians think bears little resemblance to Germans’ attention to detail or American cheerfulness. The difference can be explained, at least in part, by looking at linguistic peculiarities. A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) launched by HSE called ‘Understanding Russians: Contexts of Intercultural Communication’ investigates cases when basic Russian cultural values show up through linguistic choices, which may influence the way people act. The nine-week course was first offered in 2014 and was tremendously successful. It will run for the second time starting October 12, 2015. Mira Bergelson, professor in the Faculty of Humanities at HSE and the author of the course, shared the core principles of making contact with people who don’t smile on the street but who may become your best friends after just a few meetings.
