52 HSE Students Awarded Presidential Grants
Russian Presidential grants for first year BA students at Russian universities have been awarded for the first time for the 2015/2016 academic year. HSE students were among the top recipients.
In December 2015, the Russian President signed a directive ‘On State Support Measures for People Who Display Outstanding Talent’. This set up a system of grants worth 20,000 roubles per month for prospective students with outstanding performance at school (in national Olympiads, sporting competitions, major musical contests, etc) who are applying for state-funded places at Russian universities. Applications for grants were submitted to three ministries – Education and Science, Culture, and Sport.
The grants are paid throughout the full term of education, and there is only one condition – that the grant recipient stays in Russia for 5 years following the completion of their BA.
Over 800 people applied for the first grants. 52 HSE students on 16 different BA courses ranging from Oriental Studies to Applied Mathematics and Informatics received Presidential grants. In terms of the number of students awarded grants, HSE is one of Russia’s top universities.
A public council for the independent evaluation of the quality of education conditions has been created at the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. Alexander Milkus, Head of the HSE Laboratory for Educational and Youth Journalism, has been unanimously elected as its chair.
Semyonov Award is designed as an internship at the HSE Laboratory for University Development and support to early-career scholars for participation in joint research.
HSE University has maintained its leading position in the ranking compiled by the Russian Council for International Affairs. The ranking evaluated the websites of 65 Russian universities. HSE was awarded 104 points out of 108, increasing its position by 11 points on last year. HSE's closest rival ranked a further 17 points behind, which is a larger gap than previously.
On Wednesday, 16 May 2018, the President of the European Research Council (ERC), Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, gave an open lecture at HSE on ‘Public funding for research & innovation: The experience of the European Research Council’. The lecture was organized by HSE together with the Delegation of the European Union to the Russian Federation.
The Russian Science Foundation has announced the most recent winners of three-year grants for scientific research. Among the recipients are a number of projects carried out by scientists at the Higher School of Economics.
Center for Language and Brain Wins 3-Year Grant to Study Prevention, Diagnostics and Therapy of Language Disorders
The HSE Center for Language and Brain studies a broad range of topics related to the connection between the brain and language. For Svetlana Malyutina, Deputy Head, and Mariya Khudyakova, Junior Research Fellow, particularly interesting areas of focus include the breakdown of language processing after brain damage (e.g., stroke, neurosurgery, epilepsy) and language acquisition in children.
The HSE Centre for Psychometrics in eLearning is currently developing techniques, tools, and automated services for psychometric analysis of online courses as part of the project ‘Modern Digital Educational Environment in the Russian Federation’. In this respect, HSE was the winner of a competition held by the Russian Ministry of Education and will receive a grant for developing analytical approaches for e-learning.
Elizaveta Sysoeva (Doctoral School of History) and Alexander Suvalko (Doctoral School of Philosophy), doctoral students at the HSE Faculty of Humanities, have received grants from the Russian President to study abroad in the academic year 2017/18.
The Russian Science Foundation has announced winners of its latest grant competition to support basic scientific research and exploratory scientific research conducted by research teams.
The HSE’s business incubator was recognized by the Internet Initiatives Development Fund (IIDF) as Incubator of the Year in the first youth internet entrepreneurship forum.
